This is the camera I have and use. I love it, it works great!

I'm have mixed feelings about this. When I performed, I loved hearing the audience cheering me on. It made me feel like I was "good enough" to be there, and that I should continue because everyone was enjoying it.
I think part of the "is it appropriate" question can come from the mood of the venue too. Face it, in a bar, people are going to cheer and yell, they are likely drinking too and one most often leads to the other. But at a more serious venue, say in a theatre, or a large respected competition, I think a more quiet form of appreciation (clapping) would be more appropriate.

Welcome from Guelph Ontario! Sounds like there are quite a few of you in the Ottawa region, I'm so jealous! 🙂

Welcome to Studio Veena!
My first recommendation is that you try to find a studio in your area that teaches pole dance. Obviously your progress will be faster when you have an instructor by your side, who can spot you safely and correct your technique as you learn. However, if that is not possible, or you're uncomfortable trying this in a class environment; than the lessons here are really fantastic. Buy a pole (you can buy one of the best professional and removeable poles on the market here as well), and sign up for Veena's lessons. She has lessons on strengthening and conditioning, and is very safety concious. The lessons progress you from simple holds and spins all the way to advanced poses.
As well, you have all the rest of us members at your fingertips for advice, inspiration, and anything else you can think of.

I used to do this too when I first started. I found part of my problem to be that my outside wrist was not neutral when I grabbed the pole to set up for an invert, it would wrap around behind the pole. Then, when my feet would come up off the ground I would swing around towards a neutral position. It was rather awkward, and not very pretty. I think part of it was that I was compensating for a lack of grip strength, or I should say "perceived" lack of grip strength. Once I realized that straightening out that wrist eliminated the swing, I was fine.

She was my first pole idol ever too. Would love to see something new from her.

My career path has been a roller coaster of ups and downs, and a few track changes along the way.
I started out wanting to be a machinist, but I live in a small town where it's a bit of a "boys' club" and since I have boobs…well…even after 8 years of experience it didn't work out so well. Then in 2008 the recession hit…and I haven't had a permanent full-time job since. I started taking an accounting program in hopes of findng a job doing that, but have had no luck in that department even after 3 years of classes! And since I don't have full-time employment I can't afford to keep taking the classes, so I don't even know if I'll ever get to finish the program! 🙁 In the meantime I've done receptionist/administrative work, fast food, worked at a convenience store, and a few temporary jobs here and there to make ends meet. Currently I work at Canadian Tire (a hardware store), make beds in a Long Term Care facility, and teach pole lessons to a couple friends. This summer I am planning on doing my group fitness certification, and start advertising to teach pole so maybe I can quit one of the other part-time jobs. 🙂

And splits galore, the girl is strong and flexible. The only thing that gives away that she hasn't been at it very long is a small lack of control in some of those bigger moves. Once she nails that, which I'm sure she will, she will be unstoppable.
How long until we see children's divisions in pole competitions, or pole dance in "regular" kids dance comps? 🙂

Ugh, spinning inverts are mine too. I'm missing some kind of technique I just know it! I know I'm strong enough because I can deadlift and aerial invert…but when I'm fighting the pull of a spinning pole it's a complete no-go!

Oh darn the second link didn't turn into a link. Oh well it is located in the One Minute Astronomer article as well, or you can just copy and paste it into your browser's address bar. 🙂
