Very pretty Rara. I can't imagine actually poling on a rose though, those thorns would hurt! LOL 🙂

Hmm, good question. I would like to know the answer to this as well. I have heard that some of the state comps allow competitors from other states so why not from out of country as well?

By "flat feet" I'm assuming you mean flexed feet vs. pointed toes. It just changes the muscles used/stretched. I have never heard anything about it being a safety concern (but I am no pro). I would think you could do either (or both). When I train my flexibility (which is nowhere near often enough lol) I mostly do pointed toes because that is how I want to be on the pole. 🙂 I train it the way I want to use it. I do some with flexed feet too though, to stretch the backs of my legs.

To do it lower down (much safer and less scary) you just press your feet against your partners hands as they push back to give you the resistance that the ceiling normally would. I am nowhere near ready to attempt this move, but have seen it done this way. It is definitely how I would try it first. 🙂

If you're not thinking about competing, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Call it personal preference or personal style and move on. 🙂

@Kittycat86 Speaking of "obscure" music, I love RUSH! But I agree, very complex and difficult to dance to…and that's not even worrying about the fact that the songs could easily be 7 minutes or longer! :O lol

You have 4 studios and a strip club…how can you say you have nowhere to perform???
Talk to the studio owners and organize a showcase or competition at one of their locations, I'm sure one of them would be willing to host. They must have students who would want to showoff what they've learned, and with some advertising it could be a great way to engage the general public and show them that it's not just about what they see at the strip club. 🙂
To quote Trooper (Canadian Rock Band from the 70's), "If you don't like what you've got, why don't you change it?"

I would totally contact his show! Not for the purpose of being angry that he made fun of you, but like you said, "to show him it's harder than it looks." 🙂 That would be awesome! Is there a clip of the monologue online, I'd like to see it?

Leave it to chemmie, SV's own personal internet search guru, to not only come up with a pic but 4 other names too. LOL

Hi Jade, what part of Canada are you from/live in? I'm a great white northener myself, from Ontario, just north west of Toronto. 🙂
I wish I could help you more but I don't know much about the competition itself. I know that in past years the competition has always been in Vancouver, BC but I have heard it rumored that it will be in TO in 2012. I don't know whether that is good or bad for you, but I'm looking forward to going if it is in Toronto. 🙂 I also know that the organizers for MPDC have been known to appear on this forum from time to time, so hopefully someone will find your inquiry and be able to help you out more. Another option is to try to speak with or email Shanyn Pollard, our current MPDC champion. She runs SASS studios in Stoney Creek (near Hamilton, ON) and I'm sure she could put you in contact with the right people to answer your questions.

I have hyperextending elbows and knees too. My knees have caused me no end of grief because I tend to hold my weight (while standing) on my knee joints instead of the strong muscles in your legs. After nearly 30 years of this habit I have awful knees which also translates to sore feet, hips, and back sometimes. Yoga and pole have both really helped me break the habit and learn to use the muscles the way they are supposed to be used. I am stronger and have less pain than I used to because I try to be aware of my form. As for my elbows, while hyperextension feels "normal" for me it most definitely does not feel stronger or more secure while on the pole. My shoulders sink, and I lose all stability especially in inverted poses. It is something I have to constantly think about, but for me it is worth it to work on proper form.

That's quite a list! Some of those are currently on my to-do list too. 🙂 Good luck
