Hey there, I actually sent a couple emails to male polers on youtube when I began teaching my husband to pole. He was inspired by the Malakamb videos on youtube and informed me he wanted to learn pole but "without all the sexy stuff". Joel and Jungle Cat were both very friendly and helpful. The only tequnique I have really adjusted is while gripping with the thighs like in a pole sit. While we grip up high at the very top of our thighs, men need a little extra space in that area and will grip further down. Other than that we started at the beginning with crucifix's, sits, spins, etc. I'm not planning on doing floorwork, or a lot of our dancey transitions at least for now. In the future, if he wants "filler material" we'll add later. For now, I'm trying to keep him interested and make it fun.
He was very surprised at how much it hurts the thighs when you're learning to grip the pole. LOL Although I would never laugh at him during one of our lessons, it is funny to watch a big strong man, who rarely gives in to pain, to look like he wants to cry while trying to do an upright crucifix.
Oh and I don't know whether it's a guy thing, or just because my husband in particular is stubborn, but he likes to argue about technique with me. lol "I don't think I need to point a finger down." (In reference to the lower hand in a split grip position) Since he's strong enough to do it anyway he wants, he thinks he can get away with it…not in my class! Haha

Everyone has already said it all. 🙂 I just wanted to add that I couldn't even lift my feet off the ground for like the first month! It's normal, you'll get there. 🙂

Your ability to control the direction your moves face will come with time and practice, until then you can try putting your pole on spin as mentioned earlier, or invite a friend to come over to take some photos of you. That way no matter which way you end up facing, your friend will still find a good angle to take the shot. 🙂

Absolutely possible! Gymnasts do this move all the time into a handstand usually, but the principles of doing it into an elbow stand are the same. It is called a press handstand. 🙂

@Modelesque – You have to come! I wouldn't worry about being alone, we're all going to be looking for eachother. I'm performing 3rd, my real name is Carolyn so come say hi!

Glad to hear your finding more time for pole again! Your top arm should be really engaged, with most of your weight held up by that top arm and the rest being across the top of the thigh of the lower leg. Like most split grip positions, your bottom hand is mostly to stabalize and balance, not to hold a lot of weight.
Make sure to engage your shoulders and force them down away from your ears. It sounds like you might be "sinking" into your lower shoulder which could cause the move to be painful.
You might also want to try another way to get into superman that doesn't involve the "flip over" for example from a pike hip hold.

Don't let one misinformed, loser, douchebag ruin the good you've done and the fun you had. There are some people that will never change their mind about pole. Just think about all the people you did reach, and how many of them will spread the good word about pole.:)

I use CyberLink Power Director 8. But it's not a free program, and I don't know what it costs. Maybe someone else can recommend a good free one, or you could try to google for one.

I have the same problem, no matter how loud the stereo sounds to me, my recordings sound quiet and dull. The best solution is to use a video editor and mute the video track, then add in the song in a music track. This allows you to control the volume and quality of the sound.

Unforetunately everyone's body chemistry is different and therefore reacts differently to different finishes. There is just no way to know how your body will react to a specific finish until you try it. However, the weather is definitely also a factor and you may find it reacts differently on other days. The other good news is that just like the pole burn you experienced when you first learned to pole, this too will go away as your body gets used to it. Good luck! 🙂

Do you have Veena's lessons? She has a lot of great transitions right here on this site! 🙂
