I call my pole Quicksilver. I have a silver car I name Argento (a common Italian surname), but I had thought about calling it Quicksilver. But it's a better pole name anyway.

It would also help if I posted the link to the store by Giddyspinster: http://www.etsy.com/shop/giddyspinster?ref=top_trail

Sounds like good advice. If there aren’t any takers in the next week, I’ll do that.

My daily go-to sites are FitSugar, Los Angeles Times Health section and the New York Times Health section.
I also visit Glamour magazine’s Vitamin G occasionally.

How did you order your pole from? In some cases, if you submit a complaint about the shipping process, you may get a refund on the shipping costs or at least store credit. I’ve had a similar experience with tracking that my shipping said that it was going to one state and had been delivered when I lived in the opposite direction. I talked to the seller and I got a store credit. You shouldn’t have to go through this aggravation over someone else’s incompetence. Be sure to keep copies of your shipping order and see if something can be done about it.

I’m tempted to express my nerdiness and buy these booty shorts.
Kind of Matrix-like, I think.

I couldn’t agree with you more on points 5, 7 and 8. When I first started getting into poling and finding videos on YouTube, it was like at least five would have some form of these songs. I’ll add my list:
1) "Closer" by Kings of Leon: I had the album, but I hadn’t listened to the whole thing. Then I saw a YouTube video with it, and I began to like it a lot. Then came 10 other varieties and the song lost its luster.
2) "2Wicky" by Hooverphonic: This song is everywhere, too. It’s interchangeable with "Glory Box." I prefer the original song that this song samples, "Walk On By" by Isaac Hayes, because it’s much sexier than this one.
3) "OMG" by Usher featuring Will.I.Am.: Again a good song that is overused. There have been great videos made with this (Dirdy Birdy’s on her YouTube channel being one of them), but it has run its course.
4) "Rockstar 101" by Rihannah featuring Slash: You got the rockstar spin, and now it has an anthem.
It’s not that these songs are bad; they’re just everywhere. I attempt half of the music I’m listening to now is because I heard it on a poling video. Plus, as entertainers (even if it’s just for ourselves), we try to keep the audience engage, so why not pick a song that many people like and you can move with it freely? I find myself wishing I liked mainstream music and not have to worry if the audience is tuned off by my dancing or by my music selection. After all, there’s not that big of an audience out there for French pop or Cambodian surfer music (music snob alert https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_DJ.gif )

Is anyone signed up for the workshops? Due to a lack of funds and a scheduling conflict, I’ll be there for one or two workshops and not for the competition. I’m anxious to take one, but I feel bad I won’t be able to see you guys compete.

MemberSeptember 8, 2010 at 1:15 pm in reply to: I need some help/ advice/ a kick up the a**eThat stuff drives me crazy, and so many studios do it, too. I do think it’s a way to take money out of you, but if that’s the studio’s philosophy, then you may not have a choice. A new pole studio opened up a lot closer to where I live, but I haven’t gone there because I would have to go through eight weeks of beginner classes to get to intermediate. It took me a year to get to intermediate and I don’t want to start over.
One thing you can probably do is talk to your instructor and have that person give an assessment of your abilities. If you have different names for what they’re teaching, let them know. If after that they still want you to go through an entire beginner series, it’s time to leave. Stress that you won’t take any more classes because you’re not being challenged and learning new moves. Follow polebunny’s advice about getting a home pole and following Veena’s lessons.

How many of you own, attend or have attended a studio which uses crash mats?
The studio I go to uses and sells its own crash mats. I know a lot of the girls use them when they perform and learn inversions. I haven’t used them yet because I am not physically ready to do inverts. How many of you wish or think studios SHOULD use them if they don’t?
I think they should have them available for those who want the extra protection. At the same time, instructors ought to stress the importance of having a spotter if mats are not available. How many of you use a crash mat or would prefer to have one to use at home?
I don’t have one at home yet, but I plan to purchase one before I learn inversions. I can’t wait to go upside down, but I know I don’t have a regular spotter at home.
