According to Pole Dance Dictionary, it’s a “dragonfly” that I believe u are talking about, so that’s what I’ve been calling it. Very useful move.

Ur hands will LOVE the 40. All ur other body parts, maybe not so much. The new chrome finish from xpoleus is pretty great too, so I think you may as well go with that. Their brass 45 is so flimsy & wobbly I can only imagine how much worse the 40 brass will be, in general, nevermind on spin mode. I doubt you’ll be happy, just go with the chrome.

Well I can’t help but be partial to Fun Pole Fitness, the name tells you what you’re guaranteed to have there… Many classes / levels to pick from, AM or PM (cool trendy neighborhood too, w/lots of other forms of entertainment w/in walking distance)… But I also have to establish some neutrality in recognition of the friendships & connections that have been made & developed over the last 2 years or so, across the local studios (amen to universal pole love!)… So on that note I’d say SD spans a fairly large geographic region, so I encourage you to check out whatever studio (or poler) that is convenient to where you will be (or want to explore), I’m pretty sure you will be embraced anywhere & have some good pole time… Do be warned that options of types of poles really varies across these studios, so if that matters to you (finish, diameter, height, brand, ceiling-mounted vs stand-alone stage, etc) then maybe give a quick call to studio to be sure of what’s available there. Enjoy ur visit to sunny D! 😉

She’s fun to watch, but bit of a weird experience w/her outfit + Christian-rock-sounding-song + club setting… Between the crack & the shoes I don’t know which became more intolerable over time… I just wanted to yank both off so bad after a while… Oh well, if I was a patron, I’d tip her plenty anyway… Thanks for sharing… Just curious: anyone know if she got accepted to this competition? (I’m doubting it, poor thing, too many odds against her w/this submission vid…)

Been teaching my students from an OLD Felix routine (2006 when she won her 1st Ms Pole Dance Australia title), and she does a layback (CAR) to the iguana hold in a lunchbox position. They are all about Intermed-Adv level, but hugely differing levels of back flexibiltiy, yet they have all had some success with it, so maybe your student can too? Just maybe 1st practice kinda close to floor & u spotting her (hold her hips, ready to slow her down towards a handstand or to land onto her soulders) in case she doesn’t have the grip strength, esp in that position… Tip: arching the back may seem scarier but it totally helps balance things out AND secure the grip…

Sure starts resembling Marlo split to me? Can anyone else confirm / clarify? But definitely NOT Allegra’s Box splits…

Darcit, YOU sound like an amazing dancer, & if I were in MN I’d be so looking up where to go see u dance next! W/many bills in purse! Fantastic practical advice for evryone, all this echoes all I know to be truly effective as reiterated by others as well… In a way it’s such common sense, the eye contact generating control & also communicating a jazillion different things, nevermind what moves you are doing in the meantime… Thanks darcit & to all for your open & candid sharing.

I want to learn EVERYTHING! That’s part of what keeps me hooked on this bad-ass sport/form of dance!

But more importantly, Veena WOW! Great performance to Breathe Me, beautiful… Yes your Janeiro combo is awesome, but my favorite part is actually your awesome & surprising dismount from that last scorpio on the spinner — super creative & fantastic effect with that beat that kicks in at that moment. Brilliant, I am so gonna try that tomorrow. Thanks for sharing that!

Oooooh, T-Rex, then you may now officially be my Janeiro hero(ine)!!! Please any advice or tips u can give would be great! Assuming u have some good “womanly” hips on u? Or would u consider ur hips small for your proportions? My arms are a little over 1″ shorter than my overall height, however my hips & booty & thighs are definitely on the big for my overall body size (very triangle shape, I guess you could call it)… so I wonder if for my particular hips/booty I have enough “shelf” out of my upper arm? Ugh, I hate excuses for not being able to do certain moves… Thus far I have mostly succeeded in finding “work-arounds” for some tricks where my arms are definitely otherwise too short to execute the “typical” way…

Ooooh, I’m so into doing this for almost all my classes/students now! So real quik if you are in android world (I have a Samsung Galaxy) I’ll save you time now : don’t bother w/a single of the free apps you’ll find on Google Play — all junk, super limited, frustrating, wastes of MBs… If you are non-iPhoner, then you may also be a pc person, in which case I echo the Movie Maker recommendation above — decent software for sure, simple design, you can easily become a pro/expert after just like 3 or 4 movies… I’ve now made dozens of edited movies (finally!) over just the last month or so, and each one is faster / more efficient to edit than the last, I’m just getting so swift w/how to maneuver in the program, & all the options, etc…

That all said, I have to give props to iMovie, bc even tho I’m not a Mac user, about 5+ years ago we borrowed one from a friend just to be able to put together a slide-show movie for an anniversary event… And WOW… First of all, yes I agree that it can be a bit overwhelming, because I think that application offers a LOT of options/features. However, since we were doing something so simple, our friend did a great job of showing us the few steps we had to stick to that were narrowly focused on what we wanted to create. And even then, we quickly caught on to several of the great audio options, and on those alone, even iMovie of 2008 kicks MM of today’s butt…

So if u have access to iMovie, I’d say it’s worth it to tuff out the learning curve on that one, esp w/the option of having it on your iPhone for free too… Otherwise if u are on a PC, for a novice, Movie Maker will likely more than suffice for what your editing needs/desires are, at least initially, and there’s the bonus of it being super user-friendly so you’ll ramp up with it fast.

    Good luck!

Please do post a vid if u can, mizzli. I’m curious myself as I am convinced I have a similar issue w/this trick (in spite of also being strong & plenty bendy, & understand the mechanics of the trick pretty well) but I would LOVE to be persuaded otherwise… So far, tho, the #s seem to be tell-tale… Pole-geek alert (skip the rest of this post if you hate math): do you know your “ape-factor” ? This is your wingspan-to-height ratio, common sports science stat of interest in basketball players, possibly athletes of other sports too (sorry this kind of thing has inevitably filtered into my brain with sports nut/nerd hubby by my side over so many years)… The theoretical perfect balance/proportion on a human is 1-1 (for sports like basketball, swimming, rowing, etc., higher ratio is better). Mine is on the low side, I forget the exact value, but it’s definitely under 1, and I know I am “short” by about 1″ (maybe a bit more) overall, so about 1/2″ per side (in other words, I officially “technically” have short arms, LOL). This 1/2″ difference might not sound like much but if you’ve come this far in pole then you’ve all had experiences learning different things where we get the powerful understanding that “every little bit counts”. I am rather “tiny all around” too, albeit not quite as much so as Karol, given I’m quite a bit more hippy/leggy than she is (ironically warranting probably just that much “longer” of a shelf for *my* Janeiro whereas my arms don’t even create the standard “minimum” size … But I’ve also been around Karol (& watched her perform her Janeiro dozens of times) and I know she’s got quite some limbs on her, hence I’m guessing she has a higher ape-factor. From time to time I test this on my students & other instructors, & it’s interesting how the results are very telling, especially as the ape-factor tends to jive well with what moves that person tends to favor or just naturally excel at.

Anyway, check that on yourself (lying on the floor against a wall I think renders most accurate results) & please do report back — I am very curious what your ape-factor is… I will try to get a video of my own Janeiro attempts to post here as well.

September 30, 2013 at 7:01 am in reply to: Perform during pregnancy?

Congratulations! So exciting! I was just at a rehearsal for a pole show a studio I work at is putting on in a few weeks, & one of our long-time beloved students/friends in the show is also about 4 weeks along w/her 1st baby — she’s also overjoyed, wanting this for years now… She will be performing in 2 or 3 #s in the show, mostly burlesque but 1 pole (lower intermed level), and she looks & feels great. Couple things to note is that she’s been an avid poler for over 4 yrs now, already at a rather advanced level by the time she discovered she was pregnant. Also, she’s got the greatest attitude/demeanor on the planet: happy, relaxed, always smiling & having fun. Says she’s generally nervous abt the whole having-a-baby thing, but to me (I have 2 kids, & 3 pregnancies under my belt), no more than a normal new-mom-to-be. So that all said, we all agree she’s in great shape to keep up the activity tht she’s doing, tho she says it wears her down faster than before, & she’s smart about honoring what her body seems to need & no reservations about taking breaks when she has to. I think if you & your situation sound similar to this, then go ahead and perform. Also, about nerves & adrenaline: from personal experience as well as research I’ve done on this, there is generally no harm to ur baby/fetus to be exposed to these kinds of changes in your psyche, for several reasons. The top one is that our bodies and the reproductive process are even more amazing than u might have already known, in that the baby in the womb is quite well protected & insulated from a lot of the “bad stuff” we worry about that we as moms on the outside holding that baby on the inside have to deal with sometimes. This runs the gammot from pollution (bad air/chemicals) to varied unanticipated physical or emotional states (stress/fear, dizziness, extra fatigue, etc). Of course, assuming that you are subjected to none of this on any kind of excessive level, there are amazing filters in place that manage to keep this stuff out of ur baby’s system while only allowing the good stuff in. I could go on & on about this, but my point being that if u are generally not dealing w/abnormally high levels of stress in your life, namely due to BAD situations/circumstances, and u are generally a positive/happy person, AND (& this is *KEY*) you (a) approach performing as a POSITIVE and FULFILLING experience, so it just contributes to promoting your overall health & well-being & sense of self-satisfaction, AND (b) you also have a healthy balanced approach to preparing for your performance (i.e. proper warm-up/cool down & stretching, allowing your body to rest/relax in between practice sessions, & no OVER-training, either in the amount (# of hours in a session, so no more than 2-3, or no more than 2 consecutive days of practice) or the intensity (like someone above said, nothing new, harder, etc than what u were already managing before) — THEN I think any nerves or adrenaline levels that will be altered in ur body due to performing will be JUST FINE for u to experience and harmless to your pregnancy. This could be a wonderful thing to carry with you as a memory (& to proudly share with your child & others!) of being this strong hottie future mom, performing with your baby growing inside you! Plus, do it now while u can — a LOT more difficult to pull this off even a year from now when u will probably still be trying to “get on a schedule” w/baby, who you’ll be nursing many times a day (I hope!), nevermind fit in time to train & recover your pre-pregancy body. Once children are in your day-to-day life, everything changes & gets more tricky to juggle. So enjoy this time & “freedom” in that regard now, to perform & train accordingly, & otherwise.

August 28, 2013 at 2:14 am in reply to: How’s the Brass X-Pert Pole?

Same comment I’ve made in the past abt brass x-pole xpert (not stage) — forget abt the grip issue, the WOBBLE was what made me so frustrated! Studio I work at even went 2 rounds of a brass xpert thinking maybe there was s’thing defective abt 1st one we received… Nope, 2nd one resulted in as much wobble as 1st. In static and WORSE in spin mode… Too scary for most people and especially new students (which we all get a lot of)… Even if it didn’t bother you while u polled, I can’t imagine that in the long run it’s a good thing to have your pole continue to wobblw like that anytime you’re on it… Granted been at least 6 months since last touched one of those (& speaking of touch, yes I think universal opinion is that brass = major grip, in general, regardless of pole brand, especially the more u use it over time, MORE grippy…)

Anyway, I do now wonder if the problem could be exacerbated by having these poles installed at 12ft (like we did)? Maybe at 10ft or less it wouldn’t be so bad? The construction felt so flmsy that I’m sure there’d still be some degree of wobble no matter how long/high of a pole… Again, this is specific to xPole brand. I’ve been on Danzer brand brass poles installed in a studio that has 18ft high ceilings — pretty solid for that much height, even considering these are 50mm vs the 45 xpert — maybe a 50mm brass xpert would be fine?

Gosh pole science is so specific… And also, I have to echo that the Lil Minx (maker of SV’s pole, I believe) powder coated steele is also pretty rockin finish grip-wise… I was even impressed by their SS finish I tried at a I studio I recently visited… Very diff feel from Platinum Stages’ SS finish that I found just too slippery, I thought worse that xpert chrome…

August 25, 2013 at 1:06 pm in reply to: Instructor insurance

Oh not sure abt whether or not they cover studios. I’m just an independent instructor so that’s all I was looking for, but they for sure cover pole (though it won’t specify that on your certificate, they told me to just select dance & fitness — u can check off all boxes that apply). In fact 1 studio I work at needed cert to specify that, and they were great about adding exactly the wording that I needed. Turned it around real quik too.
