It sounds like you’re describing scorpio switches. I did it recently in my “Glory Box” video at 1:45. https://www.studioveena.com/videos/view/53bcaa11-70e4-4b37-ae90-7a060a9aa0eb

Doesn’t matter what grip you used, it’s still an Iron X. Different grips work better for different people. If you feel better, safer, and more stable with a cup grip, then I say, more power to you.

Now I’m more confident about wearing sleeveless because I have defined shoulders (and arms to some extent).

It took me about a year to get my right front split (and it still needs work), and I’m still about 6-7 inches away from the floor on my left. I haven’t been very diligent with my left side, so I’m not expecting anything soon. I just have to take my time and be really warm before doing my stretches.

I also have a 50mm in the studio and a 45mm at home. My hands are fairly small, so I prefer the 45, and I struggle with any hand-grip-only moves that we do in class. The only thing that seems to help is grip aid (tite grip and dry hands), and strengthening my grip. I find that I can do some things I couldn’t at first on the 50 now, but I still have a ways to go before the 50 feels secure. Split grip is especially hard on a 50 for me. I can do an elbow straight edge with no problem, but I have yet to do a split grip straight edge on a 50. On the other side, there are things I like better on a 50, such as the knee hold.

I’m a professor at a liberal arts college. My colleagues know that I do pole fitness, and they’ve seen some of my photos. Some are interested and ask me how it’s going, and I can tell that others are a little dubious and never say anything. I have not experienced any backlash or threats of losing my job. I go up for tenure next fall, and I’m not expecting any problems because of pole. It might depend on the institution, but I can just say that my experience so far has been positive. I don’t feel anywhere near good enough to do a competition, but if I was feeling like I was up to snuff, I would feel comfortable enough about my job to apply.

Personally, I prefer static pole because I feel more secure in learning and holding out poses (although I feel that spinning forces help with things like jade and knee hold). I also like learning moves on static so I can find balance points and build my strength. I think it is more difficult to invert on spinny (I’m going to have to work on that), but spinny certainly looks pretty. I’m glad I learned on static, and although I have a pole that does both, I spend most of my time on static.

Love this idea. So many choices, but I’m excited to video document the evolution of a trick.

I was just watching some Pole Art from 2013 and really enjoyed Evgeny Greshilov. Here’s his winning routine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HeWMsJ2i1E
It gets amazing at 2:37.
He also has a really artsy, artistically edited video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKRYLFxVCuQ -
I think it’s pretty normal for the first pole sit attempts to be a little painful. It always takes a while for you to build up a tolerance and tougher skin when you’ve never required your inner thighs to do anything like that.

There should be a ring of rubber around the base plate of the pole, as well as the dome (top) of the pole. I have my pole on hardwood as well, and the rubber has kept it nicely in place. Is it present on your pole?

This looks like so much fun! It takes some major stamina though. It’ll be great training.

Veena, I’m curious about the X-pole brass. Let us know what you think of it.

Have you tried the Mika Lucia short? I feel like the coverage in the back is great. http://www.mikayogawear.com/product/side-string-shorts/lucia-short-no-drawstring.php
