    @miraine and others new to shoulder mount; I'm still getting to where I want to be consistent with sm and I don't dead lift into it yet.  Are you able to get veena's lessons?  I love her sm lesson where she shows how to begin it from the ground.  However, I'm sure everyone recommends to make sure you're ready, don't rush.  I learned the hard way to be patient and not compare what others are doing.  Although, I'm sure most of you, if not all, are younger than I am, patience goes for us all 🙂

    There's plenty to practice and learn, strength to develop that leads up to learning new things.  Enjoy every practice, bruises and all 🙂

    Welcome to sv!  As you can already see, you'll love it here.  How did you find the site?  As for age, you'll also see it's just a number here.  I have so much fun in chat on Fridays, hope you can join us.   I forget I'm chatting with 20 yr olds 🙂  and we are of all ages.  May we'll have been married 33 yrs and we have a 26 yr old son.

    Can't wait for you to get your pole!  I agree veena's lessons are wonderful.  What kind of pole are you getting.  Again, glad to have you here.

    Youtube is totally out of my comfort zone.  I get wonderful encouragement, support and have great fun here and don't want to ruin that with any negativity of my pole journey on youtube.  I have uploaded a couple of videos to youtube but under private so a friend could see but she doesn't have youtube account.  It was easier to upload to facebook and only allow those who wanted to see what I do for poling.

    I still use youtube for variation ideas and to see many of the great polers who are not on sv.  I give feedback as to how wonderful and inspiring they are.  Like blondie said, do it only if you want to and for your reasons.

    I know everyone is different; when I started poling, I was very active in a power flex weight training class.  It was an excellent class, I was lifting quite a bit for me and great cardio also.  During my first pole class I quickly realized none of that mattered!!  It was as if I hadn't done any physical activity at all.  The process of holding, lifting, spinning my body weight was totally different than lifting free weights or weight bar.  Even all the ab work didn't help when doing what I needed to on the pole.

    Even though I didn't feel like I was accomplishing on the pole, each practice and new thing was developing strength.  Some things came easier than others and once I accepted that it prevented me from getting frustrated.  I just continued to enjoy the workout I was getting.

    A year or so ago when learning the superman (which took me forever) I fell off the pole.  Fortunately it's not a move to land on my head, but my body just flew off the pole and I plopped.  My husband was in the next room and walked in shaking his head as I lay on the floor 🙂

    A few months ago I plopped out of the adv plank (I have a vid of it here)  I was not that high, thank goodness, but I landed smack-dab on my rear.  Right after that I pulled out my crash mat, duh!

    It's scarey for me now that I'm beginning to move on to other moves, hopefully I won't have any serious mishaps, especially at my age LOL  Happy and safe poling!!

    Talk about starting from 0, and add to that starting at 52 yrs old!  That was about three years ago and have accomplished more than I ever though possible.  One of my blogs talks about changing my focus about trying to work on too many things and not being patient.  I pole mainly for fitness and strength building, so my focus is on that.  The accomplishments are just icing on the cake 🙂

    I found that even if I practice off and on, strength is building without realizing it.  I am not flexible and don't work on it too much.  I just accept where I'm at with my body and do what I can.  From not being able to do a pole hold, to where I am now, even if it took three years, is exciting.  I hope this helps.

    Welcome!  You couldn't have found a better pole community than veena, webmaster and veneers!  We are all at different levels with great support.   I have no flexibility but will do what I can and what my brain/body allow me to.  There are many who are dedicated to working at stretching for flexibility and do well, I tend to be on the not so committed side 🙁

    Can't wait till you get your pole (if you haven't yet) and join us on this pole journey.  It's a fun one, even with the grunting, huffing/puffing and bruises, haha

    I second the different workout it takes.  I started having been active gym membr and avid power flex class, but still couldn't do a pole hold for more than a second, and months to learn invert without kicking.  But it comes with practice and patience.

    Many of us struggle or have struggled with slippery pole, no matter what kind/finish.  I started on a stainless steel lyl mynx and used it for two years.  It was a struggle, however, since it was the only pole I had, it's what I learned a lot on.  There was a lot of wiping, grip aides, etc.  Like savy said, it is good to practice without grip aides, but I finally gave in and used some to feel like I was getting somewhere.  Then the hunt was to find which grip aide worked for me, as again, everyone is different.

    I finally was able to get an xpole titanium gold and went the other way with grippy pole.  It is very different and my body got "tore up" at first, but I'm used to it now.  I do lose spins practice because of the good grip, but for now, it's okay.  Maybe later, I might look into chrome.

    The decisons we polers have to make 🙂  Even though it may not feel like it, you are building up strength and conditioning.  I didn't think I was, but now I realize I did.  Hang in there.

    Just saw that  Natasha Wang is competing, hubby and I saw when she one 1st place @ USPDF 2010 West Coast, she is an amazing dancer.  I also met Estee briefly, she is beautiful and also an awesome performer.  Wish them and the others much luck.

    All of the comepetitors are amazing and talented!

    I don't know who all the competitors are, and agree with you, glitter, to keep this friendly.  When it comes to opinions it can get tricky.  We can share in the accomplishments of the competitors and the fun those of you who are going are gonna have.  I know someone who is performing, have gotten to know her more recently and wish the best of luck to Shelly Lamb.

    Again, I haven't looked into who all the competitors are and wish them all the best of luck and to have fun 🙂

    I have a titanium gold 50mm xpert.  For now I love it, however when I first got it my body got tore up.  I went from a stainless steel to titan god so it was a big difference in grip.  I'm used to titan gold now; however, I do lose being able to practice spins much due to the grippiness.  Also when I want to slide off slowly it's not as smooth due to grip.  My left hand does sweat alot and I still need to use grip aid on it.  For my level and what I'm wanting to learn, I love it.

    I think some of the more experienced polers can use titan gold for spins and tricks, I'm just not there.  Depending on the weather determines when I can spin practice.

    I also hear that once chrome is warmed up it's got good grip.  This decision was so hard for me when I was going to replace the stainless steel, but for now I love it for what I'm learning.  We are all different, so don't know if this any help to you at all.  You are getting a 45?  Now that I wonder if would be better for me 🙂

    I am glad to hear your son is doing well.  I have a 50mm Tit Gold xpole and love it.  I do give up a lot of spin practice because of the grip, but that's okay with me for now.  I've accomplished learning a lot since I got the Tit Gold (I had lil mynx stainless steel before).  Is there a place or someone who has 50mm that you could try.  There is a studio I plan to go to that has a 45mm and I want to have a class on that to try it. 

    However, I constantly wonder if I should have gotten the 45mm 🙁  I do well on the 50m but wonder how much better I could learn on 45mm.  I also wonder if chrome would have been good to have spin practice and still a good grip for tricks.  Oh well 🙁  If I had room for two poles I'd get another one right now, haha

    It was so hard for me to decide when my hubby said I could get one for my bday last year.  Again, I do love, love my titanium gold.  Everyone is different, weather is different, etc.  Hope you get one that works for you.

    Thanks for sharing this with me.  It was so much fun.  I'm glad I didn't look around at the other gals during that free dance.  I didn't realize everyone was doing such nice transitions and body movement, I'm just not good at that.  I told Shelly I needed help in that area.  I know they are all good at it, but decided to get out of my comfort zone and do it anyway.

    I struggle with feeling till I get better also.  Part of my struggle is mind goes blank, not good with transitions, etc.  I have used a couple of monthly challenges to do that, "challenge" myself.  The last challenge I practiced and wrote down order of moves/spins.  I had my husband call out the list as I performed them.  I did have the song for the challenge playing, but edited out the original audo and added the song again.  One time a while back, I had the list on the wall, haha

    I still hear songs and think "Oh, if only!"  In the meantime I do what I can once in a while.  I say go for it, as others said, you can redo later and there will always be songs to add to pole list of to dance to.  And whatever you are able to do know is good enough, it's all part of the journey 🙂
