Yoga instructors sometimes advise against women inverting on their periods because it can, for some women, mess with flow a bit. I've found this to be the case with me–if it's a heavy day and I'm inverting on the pole a lot, or doing handstand push-ups, my period will actually lighten up quite a bit, and then return even heavier for a little while. It doesn't last long, but it is a little annoying, so sometimes on really heavy days I will avoid upside down workouts. This is not the case for every women though, obviously, and it's nothing to get too concerned about, just a little irritating.

Congrats on your studio! Wish I was closer.

But to buy dislikes for Veena's vid? That is childish and unprofessional and an absolute waste of time that could be spent far more productively.

Technically, that move sensualscimitar is describing is supposed to work the abs, but I have done it before and it's pretty much all about momentum, which of course works your abs very little. I've had to do it in karate classes before and always hated it. I never felt like it was an injury waiting to happen or anything, it just felt like a waste of time to me.

The pushing someone into a stretch has always made me nervous. Because the thing is, YOU know what your body is capable of and how far you can comfortably go in a stretch. It is not your teacher's body–I don't care how much training she has had, she does not know exactly what is going on in your body and how far you can safely stretch your muscles. I would personally be very, very wary of someone coming along and physically pushing me deeper into any sort of stretch.

Not to mention childish. What the hell is wrong with Veena doing a comparison video? You would think these people would have better things to do with their time.

That's pretty much what I figure, and I really like the look of the CKR anyway. The CAR just makes me really nervous–I feel so much more secure with my knee there.
-
I love the CKR, but to be completely honest, I hate the CAR. It honestly scares me. I fell so many times when I was first learning that it's like it flipped on this 'you're going to fall why bother' switch in my brain. I always piled a bunch of couch cushions underneath me while attempting it since I don't have a spotter, so I never hurt myself, but I could just never get the hang of it for whatever reason. I can do several moves that are considered more advanced than the CAR without a problem, but that one still eludes me. I've shelved it for now and will one day go back to it when I feel ready to tackle it again. It just depends from person to person.

All of my thigh holds have gotten a lot less painful, some to the point where they don't even bother me anymore, but that superman is a killer, although I haven't been practicing it lately, which is part of the problem. So far it's been the most painful move for me to learn, although everyone is different.
-
When I first learned the superman, the pain was incredible–I held the position for about five seconds, then hopped down, cursing all the way. LMAO It will get better, trust me, it just takes some time. You might want to try doing just a basic pole sit for a little while each day, even if you don't do anything else; that can help you get used to the burn more quickly.

Definitely let me know how you like it! I'm also eyeing Alethea Austin's flexibility DVDs; my wallet is still recovering from paying my car insurance right now, but once I'm back to a comfortable financial spot, I'm thinking of picking up her splits DVD. To be honest, I don't want or believe it's necessary for me to be as bendy as either Felix or Alethea, but I DO want to finally get my splits down. I have really tight hamstrings as well, and it's actually preventing me from learning some moves. I can't do a pencil mount because I don't have enough hamstring flexibility to get my back flat against the pole; I've gotten to a point in my tricks now where leg flexibility is going to start holding me back if I don't start working on it.
I've never really blogged about my poling, but I have been thinking about it. It would be a good way to sort of chart my progression and see how far I've come from the very beginning.

I'm so glad you had a good time!
Have you received Felix's DVD yet and had a chance to use it? And if so, how do you like it? I mean, if anyone knows anything about how to get bendy, it's her! I've been thinking about ordering it myself–flexibility and I are not friends at all. I love to work out, but have always hated stretching–I do the bare minimum to warm up and cool down before and after a workout, and that's it. Now that I've begun pole dancing, I really wish I had been more vigilant about stretching in the past.
In response to your questions, I'm in Washington (the side opposite from all the pole studios, unfortunately–most of them are in Seattle) and most of all my learning has been done with Veena's lessons, which I highly recommend supplementing your classes with, if you can afford them. She breaks everything down amazingly well. They have been super helpful for me.
