how do ms Pink ! 52 here, and love pole so much my best buddy and i opened our own studio, which has been nothing but a blessing and a joy !
there are many, many things the ‘mature’ pole dance student is able to accomplish, so don’t let any pre-conceived notions of ‘woulda/shouda/coulda’ stand in your way….
regarding body image… hey — without a doubt things are different now than they were, but make sure you take a really good look around. you will see all shapes, sizes and ages poling, and doing a damn fine job of it too. this is YOUR journey, and so long as you are happy that’s all that really matters.
so nice you are no longer lurking ! xxoo

maybe it’s my age, but i’m of the school that says don’t grab your foot to secure your knee pit grip. IMO, it puts too much stress and torque on the knee….
your lines are really pretty…. can you work towards hold the CKR with just the knee pit now that you know the position the leg has to be in ?

also please note that if you try to keep your hips square, it may take you longer to reach the floor in your splits. that’s where you’ll need to make the decision on whether you want to ‘cheat it’ a little by opening the hip, or go for the technically pure square hips split.
Jay jay I’ve heard cheating can damage you? Not sure but thats one of the reasons why I didnt want to cheat anyway. I dont mind the challenge of it being harder https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
Opening your back hip a little in a split can damage you ? I haven’t ever heard that, and honestly don’t know how that would be the case. If anybody has heard the same, please let me know !! I am certain that some types of ‘cheating’ in some cases could certainly be dangerous, but not sure that applies to the splits….. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif

MemberNovember 3, 2010 at 2:45 pm in reply to: Square hips when stretching for the splits?sqaure hips : both hips facing front. stand in front of a mirror with your weight evenly on both feet. see how both of your hips are facing front ? that’s square hips, and that is what you are shooting for when working your splits.
note that even if you have front knee facing up and back knee facing down, your hips can still get out of square (one further back or front than the other ). most people don’t have completely square hips in splits. work towards it, but know that your hips will likely open up towards whatever leg is back. a little bit of opening up isn’t so bad.

personally, i am too old and rickety for pure splits, and have to engage all SORTS of smoke n mirrors to get something reasonably acceptable https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

tho i like and feel much more secure in CKR, i will do CAR sometimes, but only if from the outset i can feel that it’s secure. for me, the 2 things that make it work are tipping my legs way up from either a pole sit of a plank, before laying back, and completely focusing on turning both legs in and gripping quads with everything i got.
so funny i can get this one, but swinging around the front of the pole from an invert scares the bejeezus out of me.
LOL !! -
thanks anngiern ! i’m a right leg behind girl, no matter what https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif i’m pretty sure my issue is more psychological than anything else, so will go back to basics of just invert/move around front, and keep repeating till it feels like a walk in the park https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif appreciate your pointers tho !

Thanks much Moon and Velvet ! All good pointers !!! can’t wait to get back to the studio and ‘hang’ around LOL https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

thanks Veena — you are one of my pole idols, so hearing what your earlier experiences were helps me keep things in perspective: can’t get all things on the first go ! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif
just so odd that getting in front of the pole upside down feels so different from one type invert to another !

Jayjay- I can invert and have strong hold and can let go of my hands. But when I tried to go to the other side of the pole, I freaked out. All the sudden, I don’t feel safe EVEN though I am. I was at a pole jam and the people around me were saying I was secure and tried to help me position myself. The underlying issue for me was fear of falling. So I practiced falling correctly using a guide. (If you are curious on how to do this, go to http://www.poletopia.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and sign up for newsletter (the article will be sent to you) If you can get a spotter, even if just a friend, maybe they can help position you. I also had to practice breathing so I could be calm. I can physically do moves, mentally is when I get in my own way. Visualizing it in your head can help too. Veena gave me that tip. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Hope that helps (at least knowing others deal with this too.)
Velvet – your first sentence, that is it exactly !! I just signed up for the newsletter to see what they say…. In my studio we do have spotters, and also a pole crash mat, so I think it is just a matter of working it over and over ? Have you gotten past your fear yet ? Breathing for calm is a good reminder too. thanks for your input !!!

Your not weird at all though…when I first stared dancing inverts were hard for me and I could only get up on to the pole by doing a half handspring!!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif Look here at 1:50 ish http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbW-t8Fsdvc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
hahahah !!! love the vid, too. you were awesome then, but now…. holy moly ! are you serious you could only get up in a hal handspring ? that is wild !!
-
Oh so your going from a V invert then up on to the pole?
yeah, trying to work on leg hook from there, but leg too low for good hook ! mitts in the way …. so now it is back to the abs drawing board to beef em up more so my V is more updside down than flat…. ugh !
-
Oh your saying once you get up there you don’t feel secure!! I get it now……When you invert do your knee go far past your knees or just barely?
no, i’m good in regular invert getting the knees clearing my hands… i just can not figure out why it feels so awful getting ’round the front ? maybe psychological ? everyone says i’m backwards that i can SM but have trouble with this !!!
-
hm, videos always help lady.
i think the main difference with getting up in the SM versus regular invert is placement of hands- i recall you had some trouble getting your hands out of the way of your knee/leg grip in regular invert… is this a related issue? maybe your legs never get a great hold with your hands in the way, and thus you never feel fully secure?
actually, i can clear my hands well in a regular invert. knee/leg grip from there is fine. clearing hands for knee/leg grip from chopper is a problem (just recently realized), because i have a very flat chopper…. just figured out i need to work on getting my V more vertical, so i CAN clear my mitts for knee/leg grip from that position.

hi v — you are right, vid would be helpful. will see if i can post… but meantime, i can invert just fine. can hold upside down in invert just fine. moving around front of the pole for crucifix, or butterfly, or ANYTHING feels soooo much less secure to me in standard invert than shoulder mount invert, and that is what i need to fix… please tell me i’m not the first with this issue !!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif
