@ Ottersocks
I've been working with the Dara Torres DVD for a couple of weeks now and it's really great! I have one question though that I'm hoping you can answer for me. Why do they demonstrate a quad stretch in the opposing muscle groups section, but then not use it in the actual workout? Without that stretch, it seems like I'm stretching every muscle group in the legs except the quads.
Thanks!

MemberJanuary 3, 2011 at 9:51 am in reply to: Pole Studios in the Greater San Fransisco AreaThanks for the suggestions, ladies!
I was talking with my sister-in-law some more and it turns out I was wrong about where they're moving. They're actually planning to move into San Fransisco proper (Mission area) come this summer, not Mountain View. My bad.
Are there any good options closer to Santa Cruz or San Fransisco? Poletential looks great, but she seems unenthused about travelling that far to attend a studio. I haven't looked into Sedusa yet.
Thanks again. =)

Hmmm… If that's the case, then the description is using some completely wrong terminology. The instep is the inside (arched) side of the foot and the calf is the back of the lower leg. This picture shows the top of the foot (not the instep) facing the ground and the shin (not the calf) flat on the floor.
I would be inclined to ignore the description–which sounds like an incredible feat of contortionism–and go with the picture. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Very nice progress for how long you've been poling!
Are you using a twisted grip in that butterfly? I'm not advanced enough to be working on that move yet, but it's my understanding that people generally start with the split grip and then work towards TG variations of moves at the advanced level.
Your CKR looks great! Are you able to do it without the hands yet? If not, that's a good next step to work towards.

You can also increase your upper body strength by sustaining a Boomerang hold in a stationary pose and holding it as long as you can.
I would strongly recommend NOT using this hold as a beginner strength training exercise. Most beginners do not have the upper body strength to safely hold it statically. To use myself as a case in point, I started pole dancing lessons with a lot more strength than most ladies because I’m an active duty soldier. Despite this fact, I was forced to stop pole dancing after 4 weeks because I ended up with a rotator cuff injury after our teacher had us practicing this exact pose as a "prep" exercise for the boomerang spin. It took several months to heal fully, which was a real drag when I wanted to be pole dancing! =/
I would suggest the hold I’ve linked below as a safer option for beginners trying to improve their upper body strength. The difference is that with this one, all you’re doing is holding your weight up. You’re not also trying to push it out and away from the pole.

The basic pole climb is also a great option for improving upper body strength.

Your description made me think of the climb tracee does near the start of this video:

Hope that helps. =)

I’ve actually already negotiated to purchase one within driving distance from here though. If that sale falls through for any reason, I’ll keep you in mind! Thanks and good luck. =)

Does anybody have any ideas on where to buy these elusive foam rollers in Canada? I checked Walmart and Canadian Tire, but no luck with either of them. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cry.gif

I ordered my shoes from this site and was really happy with them:

Shipping took a couple of weeks, which wasn’t bad. I don’t remember there being any unexpected shipping costs either.
The only thing that annoyed me was they only ship to the address your credit card is associated with, which sucks if you live in an apartment building where people steal packages out of the hallway. I had to sign for the box when it came though, so that shouldn’t be an issue. It just made me stress a little.

MemberJune 25, 2010 at 11:19 pm in reply to: I got the job! And Lyme’s disease. Crap. Now what?Congrats on the job! I’m not an instructor myself, so I can’t give you direct feedback on your question. However, you could try researching online to see what various studios and high profile dancers are charging for private lessons. You could use that as a baseline.
For example, Karol was just in town and was charging $100 / hour for private lessons. Alena Downs charges approximately $50 / hour for private lessons over Skype. They are both high calibre dancers, but Karol has a recent high-profile title and Alena doesn’t. One of the local pole studios here charges $80 / hour for private lessons, but the instructor is essentially unknown and not even remotely on the same level as Alena or Karol. So, it is also somewhat subjective.
A few questions to ask yourself: What do YOU feel is the value you’re providing to the students? What is your time worth to you? Don’t forget to account for any unpaid prep or travel time outside of the actual classes. Factor that in to your compensation.
Another factor to consider is what does this studio charge for lessons and how many students do they average per class? You can’t charge more than the market will bear. A dance studio is still a business, with all kinds of expenses and overhead, so there needs to be enough profit margin remaining for it to offer your classes at all.
I hope these points help, and good luck!
Now, I should really stop procrastinating and actually do my homework… =P

They look very similar to a pair I saw someone wear the other day. They were black and a little shorter than the ones in this picture but otherwise they looked identical. I’ve been trying to find those for weeks! Someone told me they (the ones I’m talking about) came from a brand of clothing called "sweet vixen". I tried to find them but no luck so far… anyone know this brand? I’ll try to go to Walmart to get those 5 $ shorts!! They look awesome!!
I went looking for those shorts after the workshops with Karol and found them here:

Unfortunately, their website seems to have gone down since them. I haven’t been able to load it in days. They seemed like awesome shorts! Hopefully it’s just a technical glitch and not a "going out of business" issue.

Thanks for the heads up!

Hannah (Polevolution) was my favorite of the four pole studios I’ve taken lessons at in Ottawa. She’s great at teaching good technique and is really safety conscious. Unfortunately, I don’t think she’s teaching right now. Last I heard, her primary location had closed down (Florida Fitness in St Laurent Centre) and she had just found out she was pregnant. Hopefully she’ll start teaching again somewhere later this year.
