Oh man, I was just thinking about an ASL post because I saw a lady at work that I swear was SissyBuns! I almost asked but I didn’t want her to think I was a crazy person.
Name: Mayzie
age: 23
location: Portland, OR–strip club capitol of America!
stage name: I love the exotic dancer tradition of naming yourself after a car, so I chose Prius! I won’t be on stage any time soon though.
lessons or self taught: I’ve had one pre-beginner lesson and now I’m learning on my own from home.
spin or static: static for now
shoes or barefoot: barefoot
favorite pole move: I love doing back hook spins.
day job: assistant manager/receiver at a paper & craft store
your best/sexiest feature: I have quite the cheeky smirk, so my smile I guess.
how you got into pole dancing: It’s a long story (I wrote a zine about it!), but basically I found videos on YouTube. I was hooked and I knew I had to give it a try.
how you found out about studioveena.com: from a friend, She was the first person I told that I was thinking about trying to pole dance and she ran to her computer to show me Veena’s Gimme More video.
if you were a pair of underwear would you be a thong, boy shorts, bikini cut or granny panties: dang, I guess boyshorts? I wear ’em all but these are my absolute faves: http://store.americanapparel.net/rsa8326.html?cid=220 -
I feel you Charilee, I was really bummed out when The Soup made fun of my favorite girl. She was so fierce, and she totally rocked the dance. Unfortunately, it’s hard for mainstream media to miss a chance to poke fun at a person of size. I used to work at Torrid, so I’ve been there! I’m all about body acceptance and size pride, and I think as long as you feel good in your body then it doesn’t matter what size you are. I fast forward through the weight loss junk because I don’t give a rip how much they weigh, I just want to see the dancing! As far as their outfits go, they’re just as garish and terrible as the clothes that skinny dancers wear! They need stretchy clothes so they can move, and I’m glad they took the opportunity to show plus-sized bodies in spandex dance clothes, because there isn’t anything wrong with their bodies in the first place. Why hide them? No matter what it is, once you put something out in the world, you can’t control what other people will think or say about it. As long as the show itself is sending a positive message about the contestants, it’s up to the viewer to decide. I decide they rock! But I totally understand wanting to boycott it, I feel the same about a couple shows myself.

I have a Hello Kitty tramp stamp. It fit the girl I was at 18, but not the woman I am now https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif

I don’t have kids, so I guess I’m giving the "kid" perspective. My parents were always really open and honest with me and didn’t go out of their way to hide adult things from me, which I totally appreciate as an adult. I think if you’re honest with her about the pros and cons of pole dancing then she can make an informed choice on her own. Nothing is worse than making something seem taboo or forbidden, because then kids are definitely gonna want to do it! 13 is also a pretty delicate age, and I think anything that lets her embrace her body and feel good in her skin has to be a good thing. Plus there is nothing sexy about learning to do tricks, it’s hard work! Although it must be scary as a mom to see your teenager interested in something that may cause her grief or give other people the wrong idea. Then again, she sees you doing it and feeling good and I think it’s really sweet that she wants to share a hobby with you. You couldn’t pay me to hang out with my mom when I was 13!
Sidenote: When I was a little kid, my dad caught me twirling around the swingset poles and singing "Girls, Girls, Girls" at the playground! That’s what you get for letting your four year old watch too much MTV, but I don’t think I turned out so bad! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

I was feeling like too much of a newbie call myself a pole dancer, but untamedshrew’s criteria just put me in my place. I love showing off those bruises, and I can’t hear a song without thinking about how it would flow on the pole. Now I don’t feel like such a poser! Thanks friends!

It’s been a week since his death and I’m still in shock. I feel like his passing made the world stop turning for a moment. How often is it that everyone on the face of the planet is thinking about the same thing? How did that not create a mind-meld to bring him back?! I spent all last weekend watching his videos non-stop, and I’m so inspired by his style and moves. I got the Beat It routine down and now I’m trying to master that signature kick, and hopefully work it on the pole! Has anyone else been inspired by his amazing dancing? I’d love to see some tribute videos for the King of Pop! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_king.gif

Be careful, it’s easy to get addicted to AA clothes. The cut is so nice that you end up wanting one in every color, and of course they make a million colors! I thought I had it bad before I started dancing, but now that the realm of shorts and one-pieces are useful to me, it’s getting pretty hard to control myself. Have fun shopping! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I’m wondering where to get some shorts that are good for poling and just a little bit more modest, but not to long or loose in the leg area. I’ve got a couple weeks before I start I’m sooooooo excited!!!
I when I practice I wear these running shorts from American Apparel: http://store.americanapparel.net/7301.html. They’re short enough that they don’t get in the way of gripping with your thighs, and even though I’m pretty modest about my upper thighs I didn’t feel overexposed when I wore them to class. They also make bloomers that are ridiculously adorable which have elastic around the thighs, which would be good for modesty. The only bummer thing about AA is their sizing, it’s very small. I’m about a size 8 and I have to wear their largest women’s size most of the time, which I think is pretty unfair. Despite that I LOVE AA for pole clothes!

I did it! Of course, I still managed to make a couple bonehead moves (upside down adjuster cover?! How’d I let that slip?), but they’re all mistakes you only make once. Aside from getting it level, I’d say I’m a pro. Thanks again!

I just started dancing regularly a few weeks ago, and I kinda messed up my wrist too. It was sore and it hurt to lift even really light things, but I still couldn’t resist the urge to spin so I took my pole down for a few days and let my wrist relax. I also bought a wrist brace to remind myself not to use that hand, it was just $10 at the grocery store and it velcros on and keeps your wrist from moving around. After a couple of days of not using it very much I felt much better, but then I had to put the pole up again (which was a mess), and all the turning made it sore again! Anyway, just take it easy on that hand for a couple of days, and I’m sure it’ll feel better. Good luck!

Foxy, you rock! The instructions alone are simple enough, I just felt like I was doing them out of order and somehow messing up my pole. I think my real problem is that I had been ignoring the locking nut all along, for weeks and weeks of dancing it just lived merrily at the top of the adjuster! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_eek.gif I’m amazed the whole thing didn’t fall down, but it did get pretty wobbly eventually. I think having an actual person explain how they do it clicked better in my brain. Thank you so much for writing all of it out, I’m going to give it another shot tonight and I’m sure it’ll be a total success.

This post is great. As a rank noob, I get so excited to learn new things that once I do a trick I want to move on to something else. It feels like I’ve been doing spins forever, and while I love them I’m really curious about what it feels like to hang upside down. I definitely don’t have the strength in my abs or arms yet, so each time I get the urge to try to invert I’ll think about all the great advice in this post. Thanks!
