Hey you sound just like me!!
I have exams next week, and for the last couple of months have not been able to pole at all almost! But I do find that if you get into the right mood, change into poling clothes, give the pole a good wipe down with lots of alcohol, put on some loud music and just have a good poling session you quickly realise that things aren’t going as bad as they seem. Sometimes you can only get things like moves or spins when you are in the right frame of mind, and that requires that you signal to youself that it is POLETIME and POLETIME ONLY when you do get a moment to practice!
Progress is weird, it goes in spurts and then laaaaaaaags for ages! If you feel like you are not getting anything new just focus on perfecting a few old things. Don’t get hung up on moves, it just frustrates you.
For me, I learnt to invert early on, but then it wasn’t until I went for classes at the gym that I was able to actually do anything once upside down. I also think it makes a difference if you have somebody there to physically show you the moves or not. I find that it takes me waaaay longer to learn moves on my own than when somebody shows me how to do it.
And something I often seem to forget – its not a race – the pole will still be there when I get that surge of inspiration, its for enjoyment not another thing to add stress to my life.
And definately film yourself, you will probably be plesantly surprised, and it will give you a really good indication on what you might be doing wrong with some moves!
Hope that helps!!

Yep just click on the lessons tab at the top of the page and you can see them all and how they range from strength excercises to basic spins to the more advanced moves.
Also if you click on ‘Home’ then on the right you can get a free trial of a lesson! Sounds like Veena’s lessons are absolutely perfect for you to learn from at home!

MemberJune 9, 2009 at 12:52 am in reply to: My Winning Routine Miss Pole Fetish UtahThank you. Yes I choreographed the whole thing myself. It took over three months to work out the tweaks but i was so nervous performing it that I forgot a few spins but it still turned out.
Yes it definately turned out! I am so impressed that you choreographed that yourself! That is one of the most difficult things I think, finding new and creative ways to combine moves to music. I thought you did an amazing job, it all flowed really smoothly.
Hope I can put something together like that one day – something to work towards!!

MemberJune 9, 2009 at 12:09 am in reply to: My Winning Routine Miss Pole Fetish UtahWow that was fantastic!! Congratulations on your win!! Very strong and great routine! Do you work with a trainer or someone to come up with the routine or did you make it up yourself?? I’m very impressed https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I think maybe the flag Trena… although I could be waaaaay off!!
But I think most moves probably work many muscles so I’m sure they are secretly growing in there somewhere https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif
Also – why triceps?? Did u just wake up one morning and go ‘man my life would be better with bigger triceps!’ hehehehe just kidding https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

CAPOERIA WOULD BE AWESOME!!!
Lol didn’t expect quite such an excited reaction https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif You have to do it now, I wanna see that!!
You’re right, it depends on what sort of effect you are going for with your dance, and I’m sure we all have our own personal favourite styles https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif… i.e. most men (Joel, jungle I don’t mean you guys or any other gentlemen on the forum!) are more interested in ‘sexy’ poling than the sporty type for obvious reasons haha – but I do think that miss pole dance belgium was probably aiming for that more serious gymnastic type of performance.
Like yogabeachbabe said too there might be restrictions in belgien national competitions… ? Anyone belgish (haha thats not right) here to clear this up?

While we all want to see pole dancing recognized for it’s beauty and incredible strength, if it is admitted to the Olympics, it might change the unique quality of an art that balances on the edge of acrobatics, fluidity and delightful nastiness and sensuality. Just a thought. What do you guys think?
I think if it does ever become an olympic sport, it will most definately be admitted as a variation of gymnastics rather than dance, but only in that context, nothing could stop us pole lovers from dancing our hearts out OUR way, whether that be sexy or slow or funky or whatever! I think this (more gymnasticy type poling) might also have been the type of dancing that the miss pole dance belgium competitor was going for.
But thats one of the wonderful things about pole dancing, it is very diverse. It can be really sporty, really sexy or very acrobatic. You can dance to any music and incorporate any number of other dance styles or performance styles.
I definately think that some of us have been a bit too hard on the miss belgium competitor (if she is a member of this site, I think her feelings would be hurt)- I think her performance was very controlled and it definately reminded me of a gymnastics performance. And like others have said, she would surely have been very nervous. I know that I definately couldn’t do as well as she did!
We have to remember to appreciate any interpretation of the art of pole-dancing and the more diverse the better – it just goes to show how much we can do with our bodies and a pole!!
In fact, perhaps this could be a future challenge – pole diversity! Think capoeria pole dance https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif

Thats such a cool idea!
I don’t know much about ballet, but I have seen that there are lots of jumps and pirouttes – maybe you could figure out how to use the pole to do some basic leap type things, you could create some new pole moves https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif
But yeah, posture, stretching ideas, how to keep from getting dizzy when u spin… https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif anything would be cool!
Thanks!!

I think forearm grip is the same thing as gun grip?? Sort of like you are holding a rifle…
With doing the catepillar up the pole you do have to hold on tight with your upper arm and use that as well as you bottom one to push your body up. So pushing away from the pole first and then getting a really tight grip high up is essential and then using both arms to push your body up (or more straighten it back out again but shifting your legs up).
I can’t do elbow grip either, so I am trying to learn aysha with a gun grip, but even though I can caterpillar up, I just can’t support my weight completely yet…
Anyway when I use gun grip I have my arm wrapped around real tight, and maybe I go a bit to the side instead of having the pole right inbetween the boobies ( https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_tongue.gif ) but it works out when you straighten out again.
But like I said I am having serious issues with the aysha, so it could be that my gun grip position isn’t actually perfect, but it does the trick for the caterpillar!
Hope that sort of helps, maybe wasn’t the clearest reply…

This is a great post sascha! I totally agree!!
All the lovely comments that people leave really mean so much to me and I’m sure to most of us, it really encourages you to keep on working for that hard move or to do that dance you’ve been envisionaging (thats not a word is it…) in your mind.
I only wish that I had more time so I could watch and respond to every video!!!

Really aim on having the top of your head parallel with the floor!! Like I said to jungle, just think ‘upside down upside down’, because a lot of the problems people tend to have with it (ie. me when I was learning) is going too much sideways and not enough upside down which means your leg goes sideways instead of straight back.
Hope that helps!!
Oh and thanks heaps for writing ou that whole Windows Movie maker thing, that saved me today, I actually made a proper movie!!! I might have gone a lil psycho on the special effects tho… It was just all so exciting!!

That is so horrible and scary! USCH OCH FY FAAAN!!! (I wont translate that there are swear words).
I cannot imagine anything so horrible, I get freaked out if I even just see a spider, if I knew one had bit me I would probably just die on the spot from fear! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_pale.gif I’m so glad she is ok, I’m sorry you guys had to put up with hospital waiting rooms and all that, especially when you don’t know what is wrong!
