For pole specific strength building I sometimes sit on the floor and grip the pole with my hands like I would if I'm doing a pole sit, and I do an assisted pole up in that position. It allows you to have the upper body form of doing a pole up, but without having to lift your full body weight since your legs are still resting on the ground, and you can also use your legs to assist you by pushing slightly against the gound with your feet. Just remember to only assist with your lower body as much as you need to in order to be able to complete the pole up movement. I did this especially a lot after I had my baby and was nowhere near being strong enough to do an unassisted pole-up.

It seemed much harder the second time around but I've now surpassed the level I was at when I had to stop inverting because of pregnancy. Congrats on everyone elses accomplishments as well!

Yesss! Thanks Veena 🙂 I love the foam roller lessons.

Yeah, Veena's humidifier tip is stellar. I have the worst grip in winter when the air is cold and dry, but once when i was congested I put a pot of water on the stove to boil with some essential oils in it, and I noticed that the little bit of humidity added to the air made me have much better grip on my pole. I prob should not have been trying to pole while I was sick, lol. But once i figured out that my grip was better I can't really blame myself for not staying off it. Take note that increasing humidity won't help your grip if you're already in a hot and humid climate.

"Shame on this web site for not promoting all companies and products Thi should be a non-bias website promoting pole, not companies."
And I think you misunderstand the concept of free speech and capitalism. Free speach and capitalism doesn't mean that you or I or studioveena has a responsibility to promote all companies equally. It means we have the freedom to promote and give business to the ones we value the most, which is what is happening here. Since when is it the responsiblity of one business to promote all other related businesses equally? I give StudioVeena.com my business because I value the lessons, the forum, and the opinions of (most) of the other members here.

PlaytonPlays, I find the entitlement in the tone of your post disturbing, and the logic you use to draw conclusions severly flawed. Most of us here know Veena likes X-poles and offers them for sale on her website, but I've never seen her slander other pole dealers. To go a step further, I have actually seen her acknowledge the value of other leading pole brands. There's nothing sneaky about the way she does business. She's been more than professional in the way that she promotes her pole of choice while still maintaining respect for other pole dealers. Anyone can become an X-pole affiliate and get a "kickback" from making x-pole sales through their own website. Pole dancers visit Veena's website because she has created a valuable resource for pole dancers in her forums and her online lessons. It would be silly for her to not offer poles for sale. I considered Platinum stages and Lil minx when I considered buying a pole because they were also recommended in the forums on StudioVeena, but I chose x-pole for its versatility and ease of use. It suited my needs better. A less important factor was that I didn't care for the branding of PS and LM.
You expressed:
"Thi should be a non-bias website promoting pole, not companies. It's my opinon that a website like this should be a free forum to the consumers. Studio veena closed a thread on Platinum Stages Poles when all they did was try to give clerification on their poles and how they were made… This is a free country, based on capitalism. This site obviously does not believe in the American approach to free speech."
StudioVeena.com is a Company. I'm surprised you were not aware of that. Companies fill a need by creating something of value to sell to customers. Often times, as a service to their customers, companies will recommend related products to their customers if they believe their customers will also value it. Obviously, a lot of people on StudioVeena value X-poles. You have expressed that you don't, and that's fine. They way that you expressed it was extremely immature and uninformed, so as a natural result you can expect that your opinion will not be held in high regard. As for the thread that you complained was deleted; For any poster on an online forum, it's common courtesy to stay on topic and respect the guidelines of the moderators. It's especially *UN*professional for a representative of one company to post on the forum of another company and not stay on topic, and further disregard a moderators request to stay on topic.
I think Veena is a great example of how to promote what you love without backbiting and trolling competitors, which is probably why so many people frequent her forums and support her business.

I hear ya! There are no places for public displays of pole love in my town, not even a pole studio or strip club. There is a bar an hour away that has a pole that I'm planning to visit, and Las Vegas is a two hour drive away with plenty of options. So I just do what I can. I try to keep a sense of humor and patience when people make the pole dance/stripper comparison. I can't blame them that the only exposure they've had to pole dance is the strip-club form. Although i have seen a lot of progress made, even just in the last year as far as awareness of the sport independent of the strip club scene. People who know I pole dance are always saying things like "I saw this in the news about pole fitness" or "did you see this video on youtube of the girl walking in mid-air on a pole?". So that is encouraging. I do wish there were more opportunities for me to do amatuer performances and more of a local pole community here because that can get lonely, but I try to see that as an opportunity for me. I've started teaching pole parties at a local Zumba studio on weekends. Having the goal of booking parties has been a nice way to share what I love (hopefully in time it can also pay for the cost of the poles! haha, i've only taught two parties so far). In the beginning it did wear me down when I didn't have an encouraging experience for a while and people just seemed to be unaware or unnaccepting, but now I can look back and see the progress. Whatever you do, don't shelve your love of pole! If you want to do it, continue to do it. If you want to share the love, continue to casually mention it here and there as though you would any other hobby. I think there's a lot of power in that 🙂

MemberDecember 12, 2011 at 11:44 am in reply to: pole clothes for a competition,. where to find anyI think it would be possible to alter or modify whatever you can find in a dance magazine, or just order pieces of a costume, like the booty shorts and bra top and add tulle or feathers or rhinestones to them. I really like the dance pieces on this website, I have no idea how much their costume pieces cost, I've just been using their designs as inspiration for making my own.

Right now I'm just starting out teaching. I have my ACE group fitness certification and I got a business license. I had my husband make me a webpage and I have a facebook page for networking also. I found a local studio that teaches zumba, ballroom, hula, and bellydance and met with the owners and asked if I could use their studio to teach pole classes and parties when they don't have any scheduled classes. I do all my own advertising and I pay them 40% of whatever I charge. It seemed like the best option for me to build up a clientele without having the overhead cost of my own studio space, but still provide a nice studio atmosphere for my students. It is a little tricky working around the dance studio's schedule, but not too bad, and the fact that I don't have to pay anything when I'm not teaching classes is worth it.

Lol, in that case Charley, she brought it up, totally appropriate to then duscuss it 😀

And "Troll" is a real term for people who leave comments like that too. Articles have been written on the subject: http://lifehacker.com/5854053/how-to-stop-caring-about-trolls-and-get-on-with-your-life
I got a comment once from someone calling me a whore, blah blah. Deleted and blocked. I made a facebook stutus about it to blow off a little steam and got a private message from a girl I grew up with. It turns out her soon to be ex husband left the message. She was so embarassed, and I was so glad I didn't engage in a war of words with that dude and make myself look bad. It was interesting that he was calling me a whore, because my friend was divorcing him for cheating on her with a 16 yr old and getting the 16yr old pregnant. If that's not the definition of a man-whore I don't know what is. Anyway, sometimes (most times) negative comments are left by trolls whose intent is to draw you into an argument, and sometimes it's just from a person who didn't have their manners hat on at the time. It sounds like your comment was from the latter. It's rare that a commenter will appologize when you call them out on it. That's why my policy is to delete insulting comments and block anyone troll-ish.

I'm sure Charley would approach it in a sensitive way. I think it could be innapropriate for an instructor to be the one to bring up weight, but totally appropriate to bring up self confidence or strength issues that stem from that. If a plus-size student already thinks (fears) that her weight will keep her from succeeding at pole, saying "hey I noticed you're struggling because of your weight" might just reinforce that, but saying "hey you seemed a little self concious, but your moves looked beautiful once you let go of that" would convey that the real hinderance to her progress was her self conciousness. I think there's a fine line between doing that and tip-toeing around the issue. You don't want to do that, but I don't think it's always necessary to bring up weight if you can address the issues that may or may not be stemming from that.

Cool thread topic, it's always cool to see the diversity of women in the pole world. I don't consider myself a real instructor yet since I've only taught two paid classes. And I don't have another job besides raising my kids, but man I wish I did. Before I had my baby I was a hike guide at a fitness resort and that was the perfect amount of "get me out of the house and interacting with adults" time. I have social anxiety, and without that regular "exercise" for my social skills I start to withdraw until I don't want to leave the house even just to go shopping or for a run.
