I just don’t think most people are cut out for owning their own business. Some people think..ohh how fun, ill make my own hours and everyone will pay me “this” and all the classes will be full. If you are not ready for it too be “all consuming,” and take up a portion of your thought processes every waking minute..then it’s not for you. Most people do not want to do that. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Even if you post signs…which I recommend, people won’t notice them…lock the door after a certain time and hang a sign out.. Class in session.. So they can’t come in. They only be late once.

Explain to everyone in the beginning of class that there are safety and liability reasons why students do not help other students.. Period.. Also say…even though it may seem harmless, it could potential be very dangerous for the person you think are helping. You might not know that they have a previous injury…blah blah blah. To the advanced students. These are the movements elements we are working on today…if for some reason you cannot or do not want to work on this please ask me for something else to learn. I need to remind everyone that this is not open studio time.
I just recently told a client in my Pilates Aerial Hammock class that she couldn’t come back.. She free styled most of the class and it Really made the other students mad that she was so disrespectful and distracting in the class. It brought the whole class down. She had an excuse for everything.. I had to dumb down the whole class for safety and give everyone a free session…including her. I would say shw was an extreme version. If I had a lot of beginners in the class, she would have been a very unsafe client. Luckily…my other students…just tried to ignore her

I’ve noticed that class time trend fluctuates every few months. I have a good communication with my clients and just ask them when is a good time for them. We just move the classes around a little every few months so they stay full.

Make sure your hips are in front of the pole.. And think “crotch” to pole.. Don’t grab too high with your arms either.. You will lose all your power. Practice from the floor first to get the mechanics of it. Your legs have to move past the pole to avoid the “scooching” up

  • Like Veena mentioned… Practice from the floor on both your sides.. Then you can start to strengthen your grip as you squeeze the pole and strengthen the sweep of the leg up. When you lie on the floor get the pole up more by your arm pit. You can also practice your inside and outside leg hangs safely from the floor too. You shouldn’t Have to use your hands in a basic invert once you are up and have a good grip with your legs..but by all means don’t let go unless you are 150% sure you have a good grip with leg legs

I don’t think those types of comments are REALLY about “exotic dancers”….it is typically a comment someone gives who is trying to be condescending. Unless they are trying to be funny…I don’t think this thread is about that. People who do make remarks like that dont need anymore of my time either…so i give them a response that has no come back.. i choose not to waste my valuable time on people who are quick to judge out of ignorance….life is complicated and there a lot of grey areas… I would teach anyone who wanted to learn..regardless of profession.. Anyway…why do I need to know what someone does to make money? It’s really none of my business…sorry for the soap box..but stupid close minded people annoy me

I find the type of people who say stupid stuff like that are having an issue with something that has nothing to do with you. Those “types” of people generally can’t have their mind changed. When people say things like that too me…..when I actually bother responding… I say..oh..sorry.. I don’t really teach those types of things in class, there is so much too learn on this piece of apparatus that we don’t have time to learn the sassy stuff like that. Then I take a mental note to not ever bring up the subject with them again.

Many studios would require you to go to some classes for open pole…any of the major brands r good, but….you have to find one that works for you..size and grip.. The Veena pole is a great start though

Clean your pole, warm up…and have patience. I once shook ms. Butterfly’s hand and it was like a firemans hand. I was in awe…that is a huge amount of work to calous up like that.

Some men don’t realize how difficult it is. When they see a Ms. Butterfly doing some amazing feats of strength, then they see us struggle with the basics or not make it perfect they are unimpressed. Keep it in the pole community. WE understand how hard it is, and what it takes to put your heart and soul out there.
