I have some lilMs and I stand on each side of the pad with my shoes and put the minx on top so that it doesnt scoot (the pad) out of the way. then you can make little adjustments from there…not sure if that was helpful?

My two cents would be…dont try to teach them too much. Make it a balanced workout so they dont get injured. Pay a little more attention to the shy one and try to slow down the "star" of the class. Make sure you can have simple enough stuff to modify so that everyone can feel successful and let them know that Pole is a Moody "B"…some days it's great and others it is not and you might never know why. Also..everybody has strength and weaknesses, be positive and point out what they are doing right..

    Congrats

Not all Barre classes are created equal. I personally think that Pure Barre can be hard on some body types. The positions they put you in are not the best for your joints. So if you cant tolerate the "tweaked" position you might get injured. Try one and see if it suits you. I would suggest try taking a Pilates class too at qualified studio.

That being said….many fitness facility's have jumped on the "Barre" bandwagon to generate more income without adequate training. They send an instructor out to take some classes and them become an "expert" in themselves. It's too bad that you have to be a smart consumer and weed through the good and bad. Fitness is not a regulated industry. Buyer beware.

Okay…here are some real solutions for you O….get mind/body online… make your clients sign and out online and then you can control the pre sign up or sign out. Their accounts will be online and they can take responsibility in their class schedule. I tell my clients that "if" I can fill their spot with another client then I will not charge them a late cancel fee, This motivates them to let me know as soon as they can after the 24 hour cancellation policy has closed. this will also give you the option to not charge them if you feel it is a worthy late cancel….

Lock the door when class starts…let the students know that at "whatever point" no one is going to open that door…so if you are late too bad. (you can be nicer than that)

Even though I keep my phone in me all the time…my clients know I have a 24 hour return text or call policy…so if I am sleeping or something I do not call them back of course.. I do it in the morning. Returning a text or call as soon as possible is very important. They are never mad at me if it takes a couple of hours or whatever to return a message.

I've also noticed that you are getting a lot of business advice from people who do not own a studio.. Choose you advice wisely. Being an employee/independant contractor is a lot different than the actual owner. I've had instructors in the past think they have my business all figured out…I just let them know in a nice way that until you walk a mile in my shoes you dont know. i usually say something like… "That sounds like a great idea. I will consider it." This is not to offend anyone, but I was once an instructor myself only and I thought I had it all figured out…hmmm.. I really didnt.. I figure it out every day with every new situation.

    Hi all,

I'm sure  has notices and policys…People do what people do. It is easy to say do this or do that, but when it comes to the "politics" of keeping clients…and keeping them happy. It's a whole new ball game. I think this is one reason why business owners have a hard time.  If you are not inspired by your business/job…then it is either time delegate out what you dont want to do..(or perhaps what you dont do well) to someone who can.

But remember one thing..No one will care about or business, or treat it as well as you do. Never ever. I manage everything that goes on in my business and the days I want to crawl in a whole and die I just decide to dig in a little harder and do a little more. Even when I am not there I have my phone on so that anyone can reach me. Every client has my personal cell phone. Every client is special, and every client has a unique personality and a way they prefer to communicate. In a service business that is key. It IS A 24 HOUR 7 DAYS A WEEK  type of thing.

Good luck and follow your heart

Those types of issues are very common for many businesses. Sounds like a good idea to salvage what you can if you are unhappy.

Owning any business has it's ups and downs. When the going gets tough you just need to worry about yourself and stay the path. (dont worry about the other places) There is room for everyone. Be authentic to yourself. If this is what you are passionate about  then you are in the right place.

If you would rather teach then own….then just be a teacher.

If you would rather just Pole then teach, then go back to being a student.

    Well wishes,

    Jennifer

I own Pegasus Pilates and Aerial Fitness. I have small Pole and Aerial Hammock classes. (Pilates and Barre classes too) I am located in Solana Beach (right next to Del Mar) I take the approach to Pole as more of the "artistry of pole" verses Pole "sassy" dance classes. My classes are geared towards all levels so that each individual can learn at their own pace.

November 25, 2012 at 8:28 am in reply to: Short-Waisted Body Types and Rib Injuries?

I broke two ribs last year…either on the jade or allegra. (I have a very short distance between my hip and ribs too) I think a short waist and low flexibility will interfer with some moves…but when I do the jade the right way it is not on my ribs…I have to go into a pike position first to help the pole get as close to the hip as possible. So the Pole is really snuggled into the meat of my inner thigh and push into the nook right above the hip. I use a 45.

Good luck…breaking you ribs three times seems like a lot.

    Happy Poling

you can purchase kits or buy climbing clear…Be very careful when choosing and eyebolt in the ceiling for your rigging. If you have exsposed beams you can use a rigging strap. I placed crossbeams on my ceiling to cross 3 joists with with a 2"X6"x6'….be careful on your choice of wood. Some wood is softer than others…some wood takes a very long time to dry and has a lot of expsansion and contraction. Be careful when choosing your eyebolt metal also…stainless steel will bend and not crack… I also bored a little dip in the ceiling so that I could put a large washer and nut on the other end of the eyebolt that I put through my crossbeams.  I would recommend two rescue 8's to tye your ends to…and two climbing/locking carabingers….You might also want a spinner ( I didnt get those….I want every one facing the same way. I am over kill and want them to hold up a truck.. I also use an extra carabinger to hold the two carabiners for single point hammock.

I got my fabric from fabric depot and my climbing gear from a Rescue and Fire safety site. the 108 inch 40 denier fabric will be very bulking and that is only 1 reason why you need two rescue 8. If you are using it as a hammock you dont need need the 8 with ears….for Tissue you should use the 8 the ears. I dont recommend the rings for the hammocks…it is harder to find a good quality ring without seems and made of the right metal…Do not go to home depot to buy your rigging equipment…it is not designed for what you want to use it for. I would also recommend a daisy chain so that you can adjust the heigth of the hammock.

maybe a little Tite grip…it's supposed to help with very sweaty hands/.. You could also try …rotating your forarm so your knuckles are towards your chest.. so wrap elbow around like normal..then rotate the forearm..it might help you get out of the elbow pit slightly..that area might be a little less sweaty?

I did a performance training with Cat Gennero and she said that you must put moves into your performance that are "rest" moves so that you can recover during the performance. So pace yourself so that you can finish. Your show is only 3 weeks out…I would be conservative in your training about a week before so that you cn make sure you are going in unbruised and strong. And dont try anything new on the day of the show…supplements, energy drinks, or anything..

Rest, hydration, limit stress, and eat clean and healthy.. Stamina and endurance take time to develop.
