there are so many ways to get into superman! theres table top, pike, gemini, crouch spin, etc etc… i end up in superman lik 10 times for every pole practice… however, when i first learned it, i could only get into it one way, from pike. the way i'd do this is, from basic invert, i'd pull down my inside leg so that it's parallel to the ground and then the other leg so that they're both straight out in front of me in a pike and pretty close to my upper body because my upper body is up almost against my legs. then, i grab the pole above my butt so that one hand is below my legs and one is above my butt. after that, let go of the bottom hand and arch your back. getting into superman always requires some sort of twist and then back arch… if you watch my video "Pole freestyle to the Deftones cover of '"No ordinary love'", i'm getting into it from a pike at around 3 minutes. hope that helps!

i've always had them but i've never been overweight or anything… i thought it was just genetic though. i've seen them on bigger people too, but i guess it just depends on where your fat settles

This video pissed me off so much… and i just kept thinking about how they are trying to find something to make pole dancing look bad. they brought up children pole dancing because they need to show how this crazy pole dancing fad has gone too far. first of all, when i was a kid, i was all over that jungle gym and it didn't matter if the poles were vertical or horizontal. i just wanted to climb stuff and hang off of stuff with my legs. if my mom had had a pole in the living room, i would have been all over it because it's fun and a good way to spend your energy, especially when you have tons to spare, as a kid.

The other thing is the stuff that leah was saying was really annoying and ignorant. she said, "there is a real thing called gymnastics where you can take your kids blah blah blah i'm a sobby bitch…" first of all, the reason pole is so great is because it's for everyone and it's never too late to learn more. however, gymnastics is not for everyone because you have to be small enough to do it and you have to start when you're really young. it's also expensive and a waste of time and money. most times, if you're not one of the competitive gymnasts that have been doing it since you were 6 years old, the instructors just let you run around and do whatever you want, without really teaching you much. i know this from personal experience. i did gymnastics when i was 12 and it was a complete waste of time and money.

well i never thought it was that easy but alot of ppl treat it as a beginner move. it was one of the first spins that was taught to me, but then again, i was taking classes at allure in LA when i first started. natasha wang even tried to teach it to one of the ladies on the view who had never pole danced before. also, one of the girls i used to work with tried to teach it to me when i had no pole experience… maybe it just comes easier to some people? it was always a challenge in the beginning for me though

I used to have the same issue with the cradle spin. i always hated it because my cradle spin never looked very good. i was always just falling out of it and not horizontal enough so i left it alone for a while. i started doing it again recently and it's alot easier now that i'm stronger but you could probably get it too, since it's supposed to be a beginner move. i just didn't get it till recently because i avoided doing it. now i can cradle spin into superman and butterfly. there's a trick to keeping your body up though. bend your top arm. that's the arm that's gonna pull you up and keep you horizontal. hope that helps.

do you have a chrome pole? because sometimes my pole gets slippery and it's chrome. it's either because it isn't warmed up or it's dirty. i clean mine with white vinegar. maybe try that if it's chrome. i find that the chrome poles are more slippery

I always thought the easiest way to do it is from an inverted crucifix. just flip upside down into an inverted crucifix that feels really secure. if you can hold on by just your legs, you will feel secure. then put your arms in the split grip position. alternate trying it with either hand on top and the other on bottom to find which position feels more comfortable. then when your arms are locked and holding your upper body away from the pole, keep holding on tight with your legs. slowly pull the leg that is behind the pole back. if you get scared, just bring it back to the pole. with practice, you'll be able to extend your butterfly further. if you want just the basic butterfly, bend both legs. this is easier because you get a tighter grip with the leg that's still on the pole. i guess the most important part is feeling safe up there. make sure you're really comfortable in inverted crucifix, can hold on with just your legs, and are holding on tight and locking your arms on the pole. hope that helps!

I think it's just easier for people with a dance/gymnastics background. You can still get as good as them though. It'll just take more time and effort. Look at Karol Helms, for example. She said in the documentary "Pole Play" that she had no experience with dance or gymnastics, she just moves with the music. She also obviously had a real passion for it and practiced all the time. I get what you mean about feeling discouraged but I find myself in the same position. I was always athletic but never did anything like dancing or gymnastics. I do still like to think that one day i will compete when i'm ready. Until then, i'm gonna work my butt off and enjoy the ride 🙂

@lainey c: i didn't know that about her family… i also didn't mean that him putting a pole up meant he accepted her dancing as a stripper. i mean lots of people put a pole up if they dance for fitness or compete in pole competitions like she does… but she also said, "I have a great, great father" and since she's open about being a stripper, i'm sure her parents know about it. that's why i think they're supportive of her doing it as a job

and i think the two are very separate, even though there are poles in strip clubs. i think the question "are you a stripper?" shouldn't even come up… i guess with time people will be more accepting and informed about pole dancing as a sport and hopefully in the future, nobody will care whether someone was or is an exotic dancer just because they pole dance… but that's just wishful thinking

@lopsijulie: of course you can be a stripper and not very talented on the pole. making money as a stripper is mostly about looks and partly about personality (because you have to convince ppl to buy dances). i've seen plenty of girls do very little on stage, maybe a twirl or two, and make plenty of money because they look hot. depends on the guy, really. some guys need you to charm their pants off, some just want the hottest girl they see. it's important to keep in mind that everyone has a type, if you're not a guy's type and he turns you down, you might be someone else's type. girls get all bent out of shape sometimes when they get rejected and assume they're not hot or didn't do enough pole work but sometimes, you just didn't click or you're just not his type. in either case, i've seen ugly girls who were good salespeople make alot of money and alot of cute girls who did very little work make alot of money. it just depends on alot of factors.

When I first watched videos on youtube of sarah cretul pole dancing, i thought she was just amazing. she had so much strength and control and it inspired me to get better at pole dancing. then i started wondering what happened to her. she hasn't been competing much lately and we don't hear about her alot… then i found some old newspaper articles about her online talking about her being an extic dancer. i always knew she had been an exotic dancer because some of her youtube videos were taken at strip clubs and they referred to her by her stage name (Joy)… anyways, it really saddenned be the way people put her down for being an exotic dancer. they even judged her father for putting up a pole in their barn. it really made me mad. i wish my parents could accept that i'm an exotic dancer. i can't really be open about it because of that but she was lucky enough to… but even though she was one of the best in the country and invented the twisted grip handspring lift and contributed so much to the pole dancing community, people tried to take that away from her because she was a stripper.

however, karol helms is open about how she used to be an exotic dancer and people aren't so critical of her. i guess it's because she's so popular on youtube and helps other people with her tutorials and stuff…

anyways, to me, pole dancing and stripping are separate and just because i might use the pole to grab attention at work, doesn't mean that pole dancing isn't an art in itself. if i never danced for money, i would still want to take pole classes. i just don't know what to say when people ask me if i'm a stripper because i don't want them to automatically discredit my pole work. that's why people like natasha wang have to stress that they've never been a stripper on national television, otherwise nobody will ever take pole dancing seriously as an art and sport.

my favorite combo is ayesha straddle to ayesha handstand to brass monkey to dangerous brain (some people call it CAR?) and then arching my back with my hand on the pole while in dangerous brain (not sure what this move is called)

i don't do alot of spins anymore but if i do any spins i like these combos: cradle spin with tucked legs to open V cradle to superman; i also like chair to reverse hook; and straddle spin to sunwheel to split

Well i mostly focus on how smooth the dance looks. since i started videoing myself, i've noticed that i need to focus more on pointing my toes and making my aerial inverts look smoother. i also watch how much i hesitate between moves. it's hard cuz if i hurry, the move won't look as smooth but if i stop to fix my clothes or blow on my hands, i feel like there's too much down time. i also noticed that i did some weird shit with my arms before that looked goofy so i cut it out lol…

as for body issues, i've noticed that posture, the way you move and the positions you put yourself in during the dance/polework will determine how good your body looks. as an exotic dancer, i'm always conscious of the way i'm standing or positioning yourself because you want to make yourself look as hot as you can when you're dancing. so i try to stick my butt out and keep good posture
