That’s why I posted it! We always talk about having to wipe the pole down, and how it’s so not pretty/sexy! Give it a whirl. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

I work with a trainer who is giving me specialized stuff based on pole. We talk about the various movements, and where they require strength/stability, and she structures workouts accordingly. Mostly, she kicks my BUTT. I love her. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_cheers.gif

The one thing about this is that I need to be able to convey to her some sense of what a given move requires…like you said, "upper body strength," isn’t really enough to go on. Right now, we are working on handstand-specific core strength work, among other things.

I would pole barefoot until you’re comfortable and stable with a move–those shoes can have you rolling an ankle in a big hurry otherwise! But if you’re solid on a move, you’ll be solid with shoes (well, unless you’re me with inverts…it took me a while to get my muscle memory used to a much longer leg and foot, lol).

The Jamilla DVDs are awesome, and she is, IMO, a master at breaking moves down. Like chemgoddess said, there are books out there but it’s weird to read and try to emulate. I think lessons (whether Veena’s online or in a studio) are the best option, but if you absolutely can’t, the Art of Pole DVDs are a good second.

I pole in a cami and only roll it up when I need side or belly skin. You probably won’t need those for a while! So just wear something you’re comfortable in, and that you can move well in.

As for the kid question, I can’t say anything about that. No kids for this girl. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Try thinking IRS ass. Clench your butt together as hard as you can while you’re on your descent. That will, in effect, move your tailbone away from the pole as muscle takes over. Added effect, IMO, anyway–it tightens your lock on the move, too, because you’re engaging muscles all over to hold yourself in positions.

Are these new moves? I get sweatier when I’m trying something new, or when I’m not completely confident of a move. You can definitely improve your grip with a tennis ball if it’s grip strength that’s the issue.

Did you know that if you wipe your hands on YOUR POLE it can actually HELP? You just have to keep dragging your hands down over and over again. I pretend it’s part of the dance by bending over and swinging my hips and little, and the pull one hand down the pole, then the other, then the first, then the next. Then I’ll do a little pivot or underarm turn and repeat the process facing the front and doing sideways body rolls (or S waves).

After a while of rubbing your sweat and grease onto the pole, the friction (or something, I’m not a scientist) actually starts converting it from slippy to grippy! :O

I was just coming to this thread to post exactly the same suggestion. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif I have even simply done a sexy little walk around, gripping more and sliding my hand down the pole as I go, to leave a little sweat and skin for later. Wow, doesn’t that sound appealing??? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Mine’s (I have an 8.5-hour pole playlist) on shuffle all the time. I like to go with the flow. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Sweaty hands=move to floor and do floorwork…or do pole stuff that doesn’t involve requiring grip, to allow hands to dry. That’s how I manage it, and I am a heavy https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_rolleyes.gif sweater.

I love that film! It was so interesting to watch the women and their various transformations, successes, and losses. As a longtime fan of burlesque, I am super super super excited because I’m taking a burlesque workshop next month. Hooray!

I am able to put up/take down my x-pole without any trouble at all. I love it. A friend has a Lil Mynx and she likes hers…but she loves mine. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif

I am lame. I bought one of the powerballs and can’t get the dang thing to go for more than a few seconds. Practice, practice, practice, I guess. L-A-M-E is me!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif

Yeah, the bottom hand isn’t required unless you’re switching legs…

I was thinking that I need to be doing this one BACKWARDS a lot more, but whenever I get to the pole I’m confused beyond words.

Anyone have a backwards side spin into something tutorial? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

Check out the videos here from the USPDF comp–someone, I don’t remember who–does an awesome back hook-ish thing to a backwards side spin into a leg hang. It’s super fast and *awesome.* I haven’t quite figured out where she puts her legs and how, but you can bet I’ll be trying it! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_bounce.gif

Yeah, I definitely didn’t start this thread to make people second-guess their moves. We are all such different people that we’re bound to like different moves…or to think certain moves just aren’t all that. But there’s no way I’m going to stop doing a move *I* love just because someone else doesn’t love it. Some of my favorite dancers do moves I’m not so chuffed about, but it doesn’t make me like them any less as dancers, or admire them any less. Heck, everyone in the world does the inverted V, which is the move I opened the thread with. If I stopped watching videos that had inverted Vs I would never be able to watch another pole vid as long as I live, and that would be a tragedy for me.

Keep on keepin’ on, my crazy-about-pole-dancing friends!! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_compress.gif
