Brass poles are awesome… we always clean them with a spritz of a methylated spirits + water mix on a cloth 🙂

Bobbi's isn't harder than other studios, it does have a very distinct style though. A few years ago it was the only place where you could really do difficult classes, but now you've got a lot more options with studios set up by people who have either been trained/taught at Bobbi's originally (Jamilla, Suzie Q, Vertica, Pole Dance Academy, any classes taught by Daisy or Amber around various studios), or have come through with a dance & gymnastics background (Studio Verve). I think it's a great thing with more choice and the ability to trial different styles & focuses 🙂
I'm currently at Pole Dance Academy in Bondi & that's great because the Adv level is mixed training with guys so puts a lot more emphasis on strength training which you need for some of the newer tricks coming out of the US lately (e.g. Zoraya style).
Which studio were you at before you switched?
I'm a big fan of trying out lots of different teachers & studios – you can learn something from just about anyone, no matter what level. So if you see a workshop, class or performance that sounds interesting, give it a try. Same goes for watching youtube vids & forums like this to get ideas.
Jamilla is lovely and very thorough in terms of proper technique. If you're interested, X Pole are staging a show and weekend full of workshops in Sydney with some big pole names in July, and she is one of the teachers/performers – http://www.polereflections.com/
Alethea, Zoraya, Rafaela, Marlo & Alesia V are also performing, as well as plenty of others.
Hope you're feeling a bit better with the inverts, but sing out if you need any more tips or want a hand in a practice sesh one time 🙂

I trained at Bobbi's in Sydney for over 4 years (Adv for 3 of those yrs) and switched at the start of this year to another studio for a change of style. But over that time, I've been lucky enough to do classes and workshops with lots of other teachers who have had great tips along the way.
Unfortunately, if you want to do Int 3 there, you will HAVE to get the inverted v, not just from the floor, but also a spinning climb, because of the way they structure the combos in routines.
However, don't count yourself out yet – the best tip I ever received when starting out was from Jamilla. Her advice was not to think of it as pulling up into the v, but to tip back into it. The change in perception makes a big difference and helps to focus on what muscles to engage and where different body parts need to go.
So, a quick how-to…
– Stand on one side of the pole, with your strongest/dominant hand on the inside (ie. if you're right-handed, stand on the left side of the pole, or vice versa). Stand with your hips close to the side of the pole (slightly in front of the pole if that feels more natural)
– With your inside arm, grip the pole around shoulder height, and with your outside arm, place it above the other hand at mouth/nose height
– Grip both hands tightly, bend your knees and tuck them in, bringing them to your torso, slightly spaced apart (frog like). You can repeat this step as a conditioning exercise.
– Next, this is where you "tip back". Keeping your knees in the same position, use your arm muscles and release backwards. As you straighten your arms from the original bent position, your body will naturally tip backwards. Let your head drop back here too – don't be scared of this as fighting to keep your head up will make it impossible to distribute the weight properly and go backwards into the v.
– Finally, extend your legs from the frog/bent position, and you're in an inverted v. To come out of it, reverse the steps and keep it slow and controlled. A lot of people have jolted their ribs coming down fast and with a thud.
As for learning on the "wrong" side – there is no such thing. Yes, at Bobbi's they do favour inverting on from the left hand side of the pole because most of the teachers have learned that way, but there is nothing stopping you in class and routines inverting on the other side if that is where you feel strongest & safest. You'll just need to do a bit of mental swapping over of some choreography to your preferred side 🙂
Hope this helps – everyone has nemesis moves but eventually they click. It took me ages to get press handstands and the right grip with the jade, but eventually they worked. Now it's a twisted grip deadlift/static v that I'm working on… not there yet, but hopefully soon. x

Love it – really creative and original!

Totally agree with all the other ladies comments so far… you’re quite advanced for only 5 months, which is an achievement in itself, well done!
I’d say the same as the others – no monkey feet climbing, slow down a little and really extend out to the full range of your tricks – point your toes and stretch out in moves like the butterfly. If you’re finding yourself too tired to do some moves later in the song, put them at the start when you’re fresh.
Let us know how you go https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

A few have popped up on a news site…
Part of Felix’s performance (same as her world’s) http://video.dailytelegraph.com.au/1617434010/Syd-Con-UNCUT-Felixs-pole-dance
And a highlights reel http://video.dailytelegraph.com.au/1616229460/Syd-Con-Miss-Pole-Dance-Finals

I watched Jenyne’s vid and think my heart skipped a beat when she hit the floor from the jade… that she, alethea and other very experienced girls had so many issues with grip is quite frightening – so glad none of them were injured!

Cool – well in Sydney for the more athletic type of tricks your best bet would be to try: –
A private with Suzie Q at…
http://www.suzieqpolestudio.com.au/A private with Jamilla at…
http://www.jamilla.com.au/A private with Bobbi or Cleo at…
http://www.bobbispolestudio.com.au/In Melbourne, Pole Divas or a private with Mulan at http://www.hotpantsandheels.com.au/
If you get to Brisbane, there are some mad girls at Cosmopoletan, Pole Gym, Girlfriend etc that do crazy tricks too.
I’ve been lucky enough to have trained with all of these teachers over the past few years and can recommend them all. Hope you’ll get some new moves out of it & have a blast!

am sure you’ll have a fab time over here.
with studio suggestions, it depends on what kind of pole style you prefer – athletic/gymnastics, circus, modern dance based, sensual pole? there are studios that fit all of these styles, mainly in the east coast capitals of Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane. Which type are you after & I can help with more specific recs? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Hey hun, agree with the other comments re: you have plenty of strength and technique, so the place to add to is in transitions to connect the pole work together & add some variation… ie. floorwork, splits, handstands, pirouettes, dance moves etc. It also helps to keep the viewer’s attention since it shifts the level they’re looking at – high up the pole, down on the floor, mid point dance/standing etc. You’re doing great otherwise, just a shame we couldn’t here the music… dammit Youtube! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

Totally agree with Mindy – don’t give up what you love… you can find a way to work around any limitations and still be able to be active https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif Sending you good vibes.
