I’m not sure where to buy a safety mat…I think I’ve seen some on amazon, but the cheaper (and just as effective way) is to just take the cushions off you couch and lay them around the bottom of your pole. I have a microfiber couch, and the cushions don’t come off, but this has worked for others. I don’t ever use a crash mat, and when i’m doing something scary I just put throw pillows and bed pillows under me. fortunately, I’ve never fallen (knock on wood) so I don’t know how effective my method is.

Personally, I like all the options, but lean more towards the second option (more dramatic tricks to songs like santigolds) and I also like the smooth, controlled, melodic ones.
Well, I wasn’t that helpful was I? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif -
I think this EXACT thing just happened to me today. I got an email saying my photos were in user violation, and my account is disabled. I’m really interested to see updates from you on the subject. I’ll keep you posted too.

Welcome to studioVeena and welcome to the wonderful world of pole Heather!!!! I have a two year old son (not nearly as time consuming as 2 yr old twins and a 2 month old must be), and pole has been great for 1. Easing the mama stress 2. getting my body back 3.Helping remember that yes, I’m a mother, but I’m also still a woman, which can be easy to forget when your life is consumed by caring for tiny people! https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

I was about 1 month away from point shoes in ballet when I quit, even then (where pointed toes should be second nature to me), I still sometimes realize I didn’t point my toes in certain moves (usually when exerting myself). I was trying to think of what I could say to help, when I remembered what my pole instructor taught me.
First, it’s easier to point your toes when you go into it from actually being on your toes. In your video, you are walking flat footed around pole, then trying to point. That makes it hard. At my studio we are NEVER to walk flat footed, but ALWAYS up on our toes (like we are wearing heels, even when we aren’t). It really really helps go into a spin or other move with pointed toes because it is actually more work to flex your toes than point them after being up on them.
Another helpful tip I learned from my pole instructors is to pretend like your big toe is a paintbrush, and as you are lifting your outer leg to get momentum into a spin, imagine painting a line along the walls with your paintbrush (pointed big toe). It helped me so much!!! Just practice that while doing spins and pretty soon,it will be second nature to you.
It really is hard, and like others said, you need to make it the "default" position that your toes go into, because it is really hard to remember to do it when focusing on other things!

https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif I did a ckr infront of my husband the other day, thinking I looked so sexy, until I caught a glimpse of my practically purple face, neck, shoulders and arms in the mirror. Not hot at all. My husband said that it will go away when I’m not straining for the strength, but…I’m the kind of person that turns bright red when embarrassed so…I think it’s going to be a way of life. I’m in the process of growing my hair so I can hide behind it. I, like Roxy, also have a huge vein that pops out of the middle of my forehead while inverted. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_redface.gif

We have a belly dancer who teaches belly dance at my pole studio. She performs at every event that the polers do. So, I’m glad to know that not all are so closed minded. It never fails to amaze me how those who were once victims of prejudice, forget and then cast judgement on others (it happens over and over in history). I read in Veenas comments on that video that ‘belly dancers have fought so hard to show people they aren’t strippers"…and yet, look they have now "risen above" the label and have become bullies themselves. "They" being those bellydancers like the one Charley came across. How rude! I can only hope that someday that woman discovers pole for what it really is and is humbled with guilt. I am so sick of this! I don’t know what I thought of pole before I started, but I really don’t think I had an opinion of it. We live in 2010 people! They have shows on daytime t.v. where women are being raped and beheaded (which I was privy to see while waiting for my oil change in the waiting room of jiffy lube the other day), but we are all up in arms over some women expressing themselves while touching a metal pole? https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_scratch.gif I really don’t get it. I’m soooo hate this "I’m a classy woman, your a whore…" attitude that women have towards eachother. It’s everywhere, and I’m O-V-E-R it.
Anyway, these "haters" don’t own belly dance (or any dance for that matter) so we will do what we please with it. If they have a problem, they are more than welcome to not watch. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif -
(Didn’t read them all, so sorry if this is a repeat)
You may be a pole dancer if…
you separate all songs you hear into two categories:
pole song or not a pole song. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif -
I have a stainless steel lil mynx and it is sooooo slippery. That seems to be the story with stainless steel though. I’ve heard the powder coated are grippier than stainless, but many people have said that they aren’t as grippy as chrome or of course brass. Do you know what kind of poles you learned on in your classes? I learn on brass at my studio, then come home and attempt the moves on my pole and slip and slide everywhere.
One thing I’ve noticed with my lil mynx is that it is virtually impossible to do anything on it if it isn’t really warmed up. The difference is night and day. Spend about 15 minutes warming yourself and the pole ( I do walking and spins to warm it) and that will give you much more grip than you had when it was cold.
Good luck! -

MemberJune 3, 2010 at 2:17 am in reply to: Auditioning to teach pole classes…without a pole?!Do these people even know true pole dance? It doesn’t sound like they have any idea what is involved, but rather think that you just grind and hump the pole. Not a good sign. What is it with the pole studios in your area? I think you just found your calling…open a REAL studio where REAL polers want to learn.

How about…a "copy one of veenas dance vids" challenge. I think it would be fun and kind of funny. Plus it will get people like me (who are intimidated by choreographing a dance) to do it because we are just copying your choreography! I don’t know…it dawned on me one day watching one of your vids, I thought "man I wish I could copy this without being a copy cat…" lol https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif

I love having this site to turn to when I feel judged as a pole dancing mother. I also get really angry about others flat out hateful comments and it’s a breathe of fresh air to come here and find intelligent, funny, beautiful and uplifting people that I share this love with. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

My thighs took longer than anyone elses (that I know of) to stop hurting *as much* during the pole sit. I would say it was 1-2 months! I’m just getting the hang of the cross knee release, but it is still painful but not bad enough to stop me from trying like it used to. Pole is funny because it seems that once I get my skin conditioned in one place…a new move comes along and I have to go through the whole process again! As my mom always says "You have to suffer to be beautiful." https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_lol.gif

Awesome article and interview! I just posted it on facebook hoping it will help validate pole dancing for some! Your dance was so controlled and demonstrated the strength that is needed to do this! Thank you!

Chemgoddess! That is a great idea! I’ll try it in reverse (carefully). I’ll admit, my knee lifts are not controlled, but I’m going to focus on that from now on in my practices. It’s driving me crazy that I can’t get this. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif
Mindy- I don’t have a horizontal bar at home, but go to the playground often so will try it on the monkey bars. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif That should get some interesting looks from my "playgroup". https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif
Thanks!
