Boy, Dwiizie, I feel you! I had a VERY similar experience in the hoop community, with someone I thought was my friend and who became very insecure with/about me. I took a hiatus from facebook and then deleted her and most of those associated with her from my life. I need space in my life for those who love me back, and that toxicity had taken up entirely too much of my time and emotion. What a waste! We don't associate at all now, but I can also hold my head high and know I have every right to be who I am and where I am, too.
I learned from it…I was totally naive, because HOOPERS, like Yogis, aren't supposed to be competitive and catty, are they?! Much less, they're supposed to be enlightened and all. :/ But it can happen in any group.

Yes, you feel you're spinning much faster than what you actually are, most likely. Video will give you great feedback!

OK, I looove the one legged climb, just like I loooove the body wave with a 'kick'. What is the princess climb though?

I don't 'get' the genie. It doesn't look good to me at all, plus it's harder than the knee hold?!?

I had a student once who lived in Richmond…I'm in Indy! I have another student that comes from just inside Ohio. There aren't any studios in Richmond OR Muncie, that I'm aware of.

try to keep your hips facing the floor and not allow them to open toward the pole.

My school of thought re: Facebook is I keep it separate b/c I don’t think, in general, people really get it. Just like I don’t ‘get it’ when friends post about their football team or their swim or run, or why I should do/like/be x, y or z. I gloss over those types of posts, personally.
I also teach pole and so have a lot of students friend me.. I like to communicate with them on my pole profile. Plus, I am mortified at the thought of my dad seeing me pole! 🙂 -
@Charley, I think I have seen that Fawnia DVD. It was really interesting to me, esp. the fire part. I kept wondering what was up with the fire spinning on a pole dvd!!

fascinating thread. I liked your post a lot. How do you get to the place where you take it in stride? Just do what you do. No one has to 'get it', but those that DO 'get it' are in your circle. I have a separate fb account, because dammit, I want to geek out about pole with people who get it. 🙂
I post occassional pole stuff on my regular account, but I don't try to change people's minds or debate it. I'm just being me, doing what I love. The dissenters have no power over me. 🙂

PFM…omg, I laughed so hard!! Thanks for posting 🙂

Probably every poler, once they get to a certain level, forays into the world of grip aides! While my goal is to be able to do moves without them, they definitely have their place, especially when learning new moves.
Like Chem, I use grip aides in performances. I tried doing a performance without grip once, and while it was 'fine', I didn't stick as well as I would have liked, so I wasn't able to hold some of my moves.

Music! I need music that moves me, so find a song you love and that makes you want feel slinky/sassy/sexy 🙂

I just looked to see what Anastasia wore in that comp…WHERE DOES ONE BUY THAT?! It is gorgeous, with such great detail. Seriously, where??

As far as music..I occasionally ask my students if they have song requests/want to bring in their ipod to play a song or 2. In my upper levels they know they are welcome to do so. You probably wouldn't need to start off your series that way though since most of the time we aren't even listening to the music since we're busy instructing/learning, but that would be a good idea once you get a few weeks in.
Also agree with the enthusiasm. And HAVE A PLAN. Know what your warmup is, your conditioning moves, your pole moves and flows you want to teach. If you don't have a plan your students will know it and the class becomes more of a free-for-all. Have them work both sides! Super important.
Develop a sense for when a student/students are becoming frustrated with a move and re-assure them that happens. Most times it's best to move on and come back to it later.
Encourage your students to ask questions if they don't understand something and to explore the moves and put their own flair on them (we aren't robots). I learn a lot from my students.
GL!

I also don’t love the chair spin. I gravitate toward moves ( or variations) that look long on the pole. I’d love a flat jade!!
