PP sounds like a troll. Trolls should be banned. JMHO. https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif

LOL. Well, it can be anything, this is just what I have experience with so far (I forgot to add lyra! I hope to learn that better this year, as well as silks. 🙂

Good luck, I love how there are so many options and how the genres cross. I have done 2 hoop gigs with a local burlesque troupe. I met the burlesque performer, who invited me to perform in their shows, via a mutual friend who knew we both poled. If not for the pole connection, I never would have gotten connected with the burlesque troupe!

My advice would be to not limit yourself to ONE style of dance. To be marketable, you should learn or at least familiarize yourself with as many different dance styles as possible. There is so much out there!

For instance, I have experience with:

    Pole

Hoop (including one hoop, twin hoops, mini twins, fire hoop) & poi

    Bellydance

    Burlesque

    Ballroom

….the more genres you learn/expose yourself to (even if you don't become proficient) the more well-rounded you'll be.

A lot of getting gigs is just putting yourself out there. I have gotten my gigs this way, by performing in public and by word of mouth. Finding a group of dancers and networking with them will probably be key, too.

In These Shoes by Kirsty MacColl is upbeat and sassy!

Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes

Faster Kill Pussycat by Paul Oakenfold

    Play by J. Lo

    Juicy by Better Than Ezra

Stop Space Return by Crazy P

Maybe some of those will strike your fancy??

Heyyy, this may be my first challenge also! I will do Fiona too, already have that song on my pole playlist and have been wanting to dance to it. 🙂

My performance name (I perform hoopdance) is Sparrow, taken from the Simon & Garfunkel song.  It suits me and I love it.

I have had a REALLY interesting year, to say the least.

A little background: I have been an at-home poler for years, since 2007. I don't really count that entire time, because I had a baby in there (https://www.studioveena.com/img/smilies/icon_e_biggrin.gif) and was off the pole for over a year due to that, and I started hooping pretty hardcore, and I've always found it difficult to balance the two (seems I'm always alternating between being heavy into one or the other). So…I host these hippie party things at my house–we make natural body care stuff and eat and drink wine etc…at one of them in the spring (April I think) , I had my hoop friend come demo her fantastic mini twins skillz. Then one of my friends there asked if I'd bring out the pole for a demo, most of my friends didn't even know I poled. So..I did. This was the first time I'd ever poled in front of a group (in jeans and boots, no less!)

Soon after that I got a groupon for a local pole studio , which I hadn't known existed,  and went there a couple times. I met kobajo there. 🙂   She also told me about SV and I think also about another Pole studio that was going to open in July that's even closer to where I live.. I went at pole harder after that, started teaching small classes in my home studio for my friends that kept asking me to teach, and then I became a certified pole instructor  last month. I will also be teaching at the pole studio that just opened up in July (the same studio kobajo teaches at).

Soooo, I went from a closet at-home poler that had never taken a class or been in a studio, to becoming certified and teaching in a studio, all in the space of a few months. Crazy!

I've also learned a bunch of moves this year, which has been amazing too. 🙂

    That's so exciting!

    @Angel–wow, that is so awesome.

I have never tried a 45 mm and can't even imagine what that's like, let alone a 38!

The most expensive pole you’ll buy is one that’s a toy though, since you won’t be able to really use it. 🙂 GL!

I wouldn't get anything but an X or similar. I've bought poles off of Craigslist before, is that an option?

Thanks, Laura! I'm so happy to hear this! I like the crop tops too–something in between the bra tops and the tank tops. Those are also very hard to find.
