I’ve been pole dancing for two years and I don’t have my invert either! I actually did stop going to pole lessons and switched to online lessons here for that reason, I hated being behind in class all the time. I don’t get to pole consistently enough to build the strength, although I’ve come close a few times. I will say that I am very tall as well (5’10”) and I wonder if that has something to do with it?!
For now I’m just enjoying dancing and going with the flow. Listening to the music and focusing on floor work. There’s a lot more to pole than the fancy instagram videos! Don’t give up hope, you’re not the only one!

So I love Veena’s flexibility videos and they are truly amazing I’ve been using them for also two years now. But if I’m going to promote anything else it would have to be Stretchit. I LOVE the new Stretchit app it’s short 15-45 min videos with stretching and strength training and I feel like it’s helping me SO much. I also have Felix Cane’s flexy DVD and I love that too actually but right now I’m mostly using Stretchit.

To be honest I’m exactly the same way! I am tall but not super skinny and just feel very gangly and awkward and I don’t normally wear heels because they make me too tall! I have an insta too but I don’t post anything on it because every picture or video I’ve ever taken looks awful. I even do some of veena’s challenges but I’ve never actually posted! I did finally find a few pole clothes I like better and I’m working on flow and closing my eyes and enjoying the dance and the movement. I don’t even love looking in the mirror some days! So you are definitely not alone. Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

I have the exact same thing happen! Mostly I feel like it’s when my WiFi is too slow. But the middle splits routine for some reason cuts out at like 18 min every single time.

Yeah me too! I have crazy inflexible hamstrings that get so picky. I can hurt them stretching even slightly cool. I would love to know if there’s anything I can do!

  • I have the exact same problem. I did start a second insta under a new email but they did link it to my Facebook at first. I had to do some work to unlink it and honestly I still haven’t posted anything on it. Even tho the account is listed as private! I really wanted an account as well to interact with other polers and get encouraged, pole has been a huge wonderful part of my life that I love! But I’ve been so stuck on whether I really want to take the risk in a world where I had someone complain at me about my eyebrow ring last week. Anyway I’d love to hear what others have done about this!

I have been working on my splits for a year and a half! When I first started stretching I couldn’t touch my toes. Now I’m about 5 inches from the floor and for me that is a huge victory! Don’t forget to celebrate the small victories because it can be a long and discouraging process. Make sure you warm up a ton that was holding me back for a while until I figured out I wasn’t as warm as I thought I was. And when you get your goals show pictures so we can all celebrate!

Have you heard of Creatures of Xix leggings? I know it’s not diy but they sell leggings that supposedly grip the pole very well. I have not tried them personally though!

I’m actually moving away from Portland in a few weeks.. sad! So I started with Ecdysiast Pole studio, if you google pole in Portland they will be the first people to come up. I had a great time but as a complete newbie with no upper body strength had trouble keeping up with their beginner class. Because of my work schedule I ended up switching to SV. I would say try them! They are focused more on tricks than dance and really push everyone into what Veena calls intermediate to advanced moves pretty quickly. I was taught to invert at 8 weeks in! But I really feel like if you already have experience poling it may work really well for you. There are 6 to 8 other pole studios in Portland that I didn’t ever get a chance to try, pole is well accepted here (of course) so there are a lot of people to learn from! Welcome to Oregon!

  • I’m a little over a year into pole and am still working on the basic Invert too! It’s my goal to get into these tricks this year but I have been taking it more slowly than others. Partly because I am at home and not in a studio and partly because I work crazy hours and keep taking mini breaks off the pole. I’ve certainly been very frustrated when I see others doing tricks and flowing so beautifully but I love pole and keep reminding myself why I got into it in the first place. For the self confidence and freedom dancing brings! I hope that helps, I was certainly encouraged to read your post and recognize that I’m not the only one!

Not dance related but I have so much trouble filming myself and figuring out how to post video and edit ECT. Have you ever thought about posting tips on videoing yourself?? I have had a pole insta for 6 months and there’s still nothing on it!

Veena you’re a genius! I don’t know why it hasn’t occurred to me that I have muscles under my boobs… Haha! It’s not a rib because I can breath just fine and it hurts mostly when I move my arm across the body and up like taking a shirt off. It also hurts when I reach straight out to lift something like a pan full of food without bending the elbow. I bet I strained a pectoral muscle. It’s slowly getting better… I’m having trouble resting it completely due to housework but I am trying to look at this as a chance to build my non-dominant side. And breathing a sigh of relief that I prolly didn’t hurt it inverting! I do promise I’m not kicking into my inverts. The studio I was at did teach them that way but once I found your site I stopped and started working on strength using your lessons instead. Oh I forgot I was cleaning out the garage that day too I bet I lifted something wrong! It’s a good thing I’m leaving on vacation I want to pole sooo badly. I just keep walking by my pole and telling myself no, or just use the non-dominant arm… I can’t do push-ups or even a down-dog right now but I read a post you wrote a long time ago about how much we pressure ourselves to ‘get good’ at pole and how life goes on if we don’t. It really helped! Fitness is healthy, but not the be-all end-all of my life. I should go for a walk and do other things for fun! I’m going to try anyway 🙂 thanks again for this website! You’re making my life a whole lot better.
