With all those tricks you mention it definitely makes a difference where you look. Handspring, you look up. EG Ayesha definitely look up otherwise you do not round your back and the lower arm does not feel right. Split Grip people look up or down depending on which way they are headed. Most of the time I look up tho because it makes you tuck your hips more, which helps balance.

Can you shoulder mount? If not, you need to start there because a good Ayesha needs to have core to control it. Handspring is unstable if the core is not strong enough to support. start with shoulder mount and then re visit handspring since handspring can really wreck your wrist and shoulder if you keep trying it over and over and not able to do it. Shoulder mount creates core control and does not dynamically wreck your shoulders.

OK, I teach this all day long.

Key points: when you do a pole sit, you have to get your knees up as high ( close to the pole) as you can and your tail bone ON THE POLE before you ever let go. If your knee is bent across get it up as close to the pole and your tail bone on the pole. TAIL BONE ON THE POLE KNEES LOCKED AND HIGH. Without those you are on the floor. All pole moves have minimum two points that push/pull on the pole. For this, it is your knee(s) and your tail bone. What you might possibly bruise is your tail bone if done correctly. It you are super slim, possibly turn your inner thighs toward each other to engage your pelvis/glutes for additional hold.

Ugh. Mine is my shoulders! Since doing pole, I think I have gained a lot more strength but at the expense of my flexibility. Backbends used to be no problem. Splits a breeze. Not right now tho!  I am going to double down on flexibility! Shoulders can definitely limit your back flexibility as well as the abs, I think.

Age is just a number! I just turned 40 and had a baby last year on top of training to compete as a pole dancer in the over 40 category at Miss Texas, which has been a dream of mine for 2 years. Needless to say, I have had to stop and start so many times, I have lost count. I find that I have to do more massages and chiropractic than some of the other girls, and have to train smarter, not harder.

One thing I am falling in love with is Freestyling. Being older, I get to just play with tricks that fit my body and there is no 'criteria' that I have to meet. There is a group on FB that keeps me really motivated to do this.

The moderator calls it Freestyle Fridays. It is a private online community, and the moderator pics a song for the week and we video tape ourselves freestyling to that song and post it to Facebook. It is a mental as well as physical exercise. What I love about it is that you get to perform tricks that you love and are good at and comfortable with, and you have video evidence of your progress and you can maybe find some combos that you were not conciously thinking about. We all share our videos as well, so you can see some new and unique ways to get into and out of some of your favorite tricks. It is really fun.

Here is the link https://www.facebook.com/groups/351634521579593/ if you are interested, please ask the moderator to add you and participate! I was surprised by how much I liked doing it. Now it is my new favorite thing!
