Beginner Lower Leg Grips

Here I’ll be demonstrating 4 beginner grips that use the lower leg. Remember I don’t want you to follow along with me yet. These tutorials are only demonstrations to introduce you to common beginner grips.

Calf grip – In this grip the entire calf is making contact with the pole, from just behind the knee, all the way down to behind the ankle. You’ll use this a lot for Climbs, Crucifix, Butterflies and more. Internal hip rotation is important for a secure grip.

Shin grip – This grip is very important for climbing! Instead of using the entire back of the calf, this grip uses the front of the shin. From the inside of the knee to the front of the ankle.

Inside grip – This grip is not as common as the others, but it’s still a good one to understand. You’ll be gripping the pole between the knees and ankles.

Crossed grip – This is a climbing grip and it’s a combination of the Calf and Shin grip together!
